A Letter to the Editor which, 1 feel, falls into this category has been received. This week the decision not to print that letter is mostly mine. I have sought and received reliable counsel which supports my decision. After this week, an editorial board will be I name-callin- g, making those decisions. As editor, I will sit as chairman without a vote. Members of this board will come from the Publications Governance Committee and will decide which letters to print. I will abide by their decision. This does not, however, cut off people who have gripes, but do not meet the editorial boards criteria for printing. Students now have an Opinion Board on which to post, for all the Westminster world to see, the gripes, frustrations and irritations concerning ASWC, the hours the game room is open or whatever. I salute the ASWC executive cabinet for this idea and wish it success. For the guidelines governing the opinion board, please see Mr. Blacks letter on this page. young child innocent, trusting, unknowing gone. We students that have no children share in your concern and offer our support to you, as parents. Waiting to hear the whereabouts of a missing child would be much more than a painful experience. When the waiting is over; even more devastating would be the call, asking the parents to identify their childs body. I am During the past several years, the student newspaper has been used as a vehicle for criticism, complaints and often malicious attacks. I do not object to students and other members of the Westminster community voicing their opinions through whatever vehicle they have available to them. I do not object to the student newspaper being used as a vehicle for their opinions. The Forum was chosen as the name for the students newspaper, keeping the very essence of the definition of the word forum in mind. Def. I firmly believe all of the thought that went into the name change was sincere and in good faith. What I am concerned about is, after seeing the first issue of the Forum, I now hate to see the student newspaper return to printing some of the derogatory submissions that have surfaced in the past. For instance Cheap Shots. I have received several suggestions to offer space on a bulletin board in Shaw Center for an Opinion Board. Students and other responsible persons would be able to express their opinions about, and offer criticism to, ASWC and ASWC organizations. questions; an opportunity for open discussion) . I agree. Child, Director of Administration of Applied Politics. Child states the program is bipartisan and each student may choose his field of internship. According to the information booklet printed by the AIAP more than 2, (XX) positions are supplied annually by politically oriented professionals. In an editorial comment of August 23, 1982, KSL congratulated Westminster and the American Institute of Applied Politics for their foresight in providing a program to deal with both the art and the science of politics in America. In 1979, AIAP was founded at Westminster College by Charles Chuck Bailey. A distinguished Board of Directors, all educated and experienced in the political field, made available to students opportunities for internships in actual campaigns throughout the United States. Courses taught at Westminster in Applied Politics include Campaign Fundamentals, Campaign Techniques and Campaign Psychology. Two students in the local area interning at this time are Roger Bailey and Randy Nielsen. Roger Bailey, resident at Republican Committee Headquarters in Utah, stated his duties consist of overseeing state races under the Federal level. Bailey states he is paid a salary by the party and given a living allowance; he also has duties which take him to Nevada and Montana. Bailey states, It is a great opportunity and there is no way we could have that opportunity without the backing of the Institute and Westminster. The campaign directors normally would not hire anyone as young as we are. Randy Nielsen, nineteen years of age, is working 42 hours per week, as an intern in the Ted Wilson for Senate campaign. Nielsen states he made the decision to remain in Utah for his internship because he is vitally interested in the political progress of this State. Although he is a sophomore at Westminster, he has had experience in previous campaigns. Nielsen states his duties involve the administration of the Get Out the Vote Program, and canvassing the voting population. He is salaried by the Ted Wilson campaign. Nielsen stated, I am thankful to Chuck Bailey, the founder, and the Board of Directors of AIAP for the opportunity to work on the national level campaign which I could have not done without my involvement in the AIAP program. Marie Hook All of the elements involved in kidnapping and child murders are actions committed by people who, are in some sense, quite ill. What kind of people must we watch for in order to protect our society? I have contacted the proper resources to see what we, as concerned citizens, can do. The Helping Hand program is no longer in effect. I was told, however, that by contacting area schools, Westminster can become involved. Occasionally young children can be seen playing in our plaza, so I feel the need to help is important. The ASWC secretary has sent a message of condolence to the Runyan family on behalf of the student body. Your concern, ideas and support are needed in this matter. If anyone has suggestions, contact someone in the ASWC office or the Counseling Center. Thank you, Julie Bell the ASWC offices will be sectioned off and will be available to students for criticism and complaints. Constructive suggestions will always be welcome. The following policy will govern the use of the Opinion Board: Any ASWC Executive Cabinet officer will receive material to be posted on the Opinion Board. Before being posted, all materials will have the initials of an ASWC Executive Cabinet officer and the date received, written on them. All materials posted on the Opinion Board will be in good taste and not contain obscene language, or defame or slander any person. All materials posted on the "Opinion Board will be signed by the author (s). Any person or organization mentioned in any material posted on the Opinion Board will have the right and opportunity to respond, using the same guidelines as listed above. Materials will be removed from the Opinion Board seven days after being posted. I hope this idea will provide all students with the opportunity to express their opinions on matters that concern student life on campus and the College. This will take pressure off the Forum, so that the editor and writers can continue to offer quality, pertinent, and interesting news to the readers. I will gladly answer any further questions. Thank you Mike Black, President, ASWC Westminster College- The Westminster College Forum is published and distributed weekly, except during test week, during the school year by the Associated Students of Westminster College, 1840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84105.
