Show Westminster College Volume 30, No. 2 Friday, September 24, 1982 Opening Convocation: EDUCATION DISPELS BLINDNESS academic Opening Convocation for the 1982-8- 3 year was held September 13th in the Payne Gymnasium on Westminster Campus. Jack F. Ward, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, welcomed the students and faculty with words of encouragement about the condition of the College. Ward then introduced the convocation speaker, Dr. Douglas W. Steeples, executive vice president and dean of faculty. In an address titled, "The Herd was Going Blind, Steeples spoke about image and reality, blindness and sight, and about education. In the keynote address, Steeples "told stories which led into a speech." Citing the American myth of the heroic individual, Steeples showed the conflict between image and truth, myth and reality. "With his mask," Steeples said, "Clayton Moore Experience Heads a had a clear sense of his identity as the Lone Ranger hero, defender of truth, justice and the oppressed." When a recent court decision prohibited Moore from wearing the Lone Ranger mask, Moore lost that identity, and became merely Clayton Moore, an aging actor. Another story gave him the title for the talk and became an analogy for education. Long western cattle drives brought hardship. Once, a whole herd, lacking food and water, went blind. The cowhands had to fight the herd. Education, Steeples said, is our oldest defense against going blind. Education "dispels ignorance" and leads to the leadership which gives you the courage to defend something that is right even if it means going against the herd. Independent colleges originated to "unify knowledge and values and to educate the leaders our society desperately needs. Steeples said, "The choice is yours blindness or sight." Michael Black, president of the Associated Students of Westminster College (ASWC) urged students to take full advantage of college by getting involved. Sheryl Phillips, director of the Learning Center, introduced new faculty and staff members. Music was provided by sophomores Howard Carter and Lisa Larrimore who performed " Bridge Over Troubled Water, and by the Westminster College choir singing the Alma Mater under the direction of Vicki Curry. The convocation concluded with Dr. Alice Boyacks request of the audience to join with her in singing Kumbaya, My Lord.
