Show Westminster College EDITORS NOTE: It is with pride that the new masthead is presented to the students of Westminster College. In the past, the name of the newspaper has reflected the church affiliation of the College. The name has not reflected the essence of the paper, or the goal of communicating, which is the basis of the publication. The new name, FORUM, was VAKSDIY With thirteen skilled players, new coach, and an schedule, intercollegiate varsity soccer began at Westminster College on Saturday, September 11, 1982. The varsity soccer team opened its schedule by hosting Brigham Young UniveNCAA team rsitys sixth-ranke- d Saturday at Dane Hansen stadium. Seven returning and six recruit talented players comprise the newly formed intercollegiate soccer team, which promises to provide an exciting and highly competitive season, according to We Coach Ben Rodriguez. expect to be able to vie for the NAIA Championship in our first a 18-ga- year of varsity competition, Rodriguez said. By next season, we plan to begin a womans varsity team and we expect to have national ranking as a soccer power in 1983, he added. The Westminster College faculty, Presidents staff, and the Executive Committee of the College Board of Trustees approved the varsity soccer program this month and named Oscar Ben Rodriguez as coach. The full Board of Trustees will act on the program on Monday, September 13, 1982. Coach Rodriguez developed and managed championship soccer teams for nine years in California compilinga 159-2- 7 record at La Jolla High School. He led teams to eight league championships and two state championships. Coach Rodriguez was also the director coach of the USA soccer team, one of the first American soccer teams to tour the Iron Curtain countries of Poland, East Germany and Holland. He was named the National NEW NAME ENCOURAGES FEEDBACK chosen for the feeling of the idea of two-wa-y communication which I, and my staff, hope the students will share. Local merchants have also provided some supplies and equipment. The team is also sponsoring a g dinner and dance at Flame Restaurant in the Red Bountiful, Utah. Home game admission will be charged. Tickets will be sold at the gate $2 for adults and $1 for children under 12 years of age. Westminster student with I.D. cards will be admitted free. Anne Sanders, Editor TO WESTMHIMSTEK SPORTS-RETURSoccer Association Coach of the Year for California and the Western United States in 1978. The Westminster Soccer Club has been involved in local competition during the past five years participating in the Utah Senior Soccer League which is sponsored by the Utah Soccer Association. The team won the state championship in 1980-8- 1 then with a record of with again last year (1981-82- ) Both years a a record of Westminster player was named top scorer in the State in Division A. Westminster College has made application and received verbal approval for membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Region VII (Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado). College President James E. Pete Petersen said the soccer program would be self sustaining with no other college funds being used to support it. To raise funds, the team conducted a soccer clinic for students under age 16 earlier this summer. Coach Rodriguez has been named the NCAAs referee certification representative for northern Utah and he plans to hold several referee and coaching clinics on All-Sta- te Woods Cross to the State Championship and an undefeated and an undefeated season.
