Show Visits Price in quest of setting the record straight Jaycce-sponsor- circus coming to Rodeo Grounds Son of Sundance Kid sorts facts from fiction By JOAN HUNT mist of legend surrounds the lives of Butch Cassidy and Harry Longabaugh, better known as the Sundance Kid. Cassidy, the leader of the Wild Bunch that once used the Robbers Roost area of Southeastern Utah for a hideout, and the Sundance Kid rode together in many raids, and were recently the subjects of a motion picture; In Price over the Fourth of July weekend in a continuing effort to sort some of the facts from the fiction about his alleged fathers life was 'Harold Thayn Mr. Longabaugh. Longabaugh, known as Harry to his friends, is a sprightly 69, thin, and He literally spills over with stories about the Wild Bunch and what finally happened to the different members of the gang. My old man was a rat, but I dont want a lot of malarkey," he snorted about the recent movie. He states that he didnt know the movie had been made until recently. He had been out in the hills on a long prospecting trip. He stated that the woman known as Etta Place wps not and had never been a school teacher. He pictures her as a' married woman who left two husbands and finally deserted her children for a continuing affair with the Sundance Kid. He says that her real name was Hazel Tryon Johnson Smith. The place of death for the two outlaws is also a point of contention for Mr. Longabaugh. He claims that he visited Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and Etta Place years after they were supposed to have died in South America. In describing his father, he said that he was the only outlaw who had a complete wardrobe including formal clothes and knew when and where to wear the different outfits. He said that it was quite a sight to soe a bowlegged outlaw sitting formally attired in the Seattle opera house enjoying and understanding the music. At the turn of the century the Sundance Kid met a young schoolteacher named Anna Marie Thayne, and courted and married her. Although none of the brides Mormon family were aware of his outlaw connections, they were outraged that their daughter had married a gentile, and they apparently disowned her. A swirling mus-tachc- Anna left her husband when she vas four months pregnant with her first child the reason, the woman called Etla Place. On February 2, 1901, she gave birth to a son, and named him Harold Thayne Longabaugh. (This was just 18 days before Cassidy, and Etta Place sailed for South America.) Two years later Anna died leaving her son to be raised by foster parents. As proof of his relationship to the Sundance Kid, Mr, Longabaugh says he has his parents divorce papers nam.ng him as the legal issue of the marriage. At eight years of age the young boy became the breadwinner for his foster family after an accident married at that time, and he "went down the road to become a mule skinner. He says that the only he'p he ever received after this came from former members where Mr. Longabaugh visited her in 1935.
