That out of 72 bands from all parts of the United States the "Utah band won first in the marching contest, second in the concert, and the soloists and ensembles placed in every event they entered. The people of eastern Utah and more especially of Carbon county feel that the headlines would have common in this state and that recognition comparable with such a feat should have been given. Had it been a Salt Lake band we feel that the headlines woold have h been stretched across Page 1 in letters: Utah Band Wins First in National Contest and then in bold type it would have explained that the band was from Salt Lake City, and that in winning the national contest had brought to the state of Utah more honor and recognition than it had ever received before. Hours each day for months these boys and girls, almost one hundred of them, have drilled and practiced, worked and labored to realize the grand and glorious finish they finally attained and then the Tribune condescends to add to the headline, Hat lays out 150 in school band editorial and contest, a nine-lin- e then think they have given a just reward to the boys and girls of our communities for their efforts; while they headline in the same issue, Shiek bandit, shoots, beats Salt Lake groceryman. Newspapers play an important part in the training of good citizens and there are those who feel that if more intelligent thought and consideration was given to the type of news headlined more success could be attained in buL'ding up the characters of our boys and girls, and making of them good substantial citizens where effort Is repaid with ample reward.
