Wejustdont have as much atmosphere to filter out the more drastic ultraviolet wave lengths. Utah also has a large population of fair complexioned people, and almost everyone spends a lot of time outdoors - especially in summer. Fair complexioned people should be particularly careful. The suns ultraviolet rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Exposure at these times should be avoided and protective clothing worn. The American Cancer Society says that suntanning booths are particularly bad for your skin. The FDA has said a tan obtained in a sun tanning booth might bea health hazard. Tanning booths bombard the body with ultraviolet radiation of two types, ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA). Radiation from tanning booths can be more intense at the surface of the skin and th us can produce the sun s effects in a shorter amount of time. A small amount of UVB can cause skin damage, and an excess dosage of it can increase risk of skin cancer. Both UVB and UVA can cause eye damage. Drugs can also increase your reaction to ultraviolet radiation. These drugs include, but are not limited to the following: antibiotics such as sulfas and tetracyclines; son.
