Show V V We Do oy Job Printing suits u V The big campaign in the building of the branch line of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad to the coal mines eighteen miles up the canyon, is now on in earnest and indications point to some real activity and it is predicted and intimated through the vast amount of material being shipped in that something will be doing during the summer. A full carload of horses, a .car of scrapers .and an air compressor, a car of giant powder and two cars carrying the giant steam shovel, comprising in all five carloads, were received this week by the Utah Construction company. The steam shovel, a new and one of the latest models, required two cars for its transportation to Salina. The shovel is capable of moving 1000 yards of rock and dirt a day and it is announced that it will be worked to full capacity when it reaches its destination at Rattle Snake hill. G. P. Bowman, superintendent for the Utah Construction company, havd ing the contract for grading the line through the canyon, stated that the work, would begin where abondoned last fall. Within a half mile the heaviest grading will be found., there being some 6,000 yards of rock to be removed. It will require a week or more to complete this task and to the end of hurrying matters next week a day and night shift will be started to work. The early part of the coming month, it is announced, another steam shovel will be shipped in and placed on the grade work. G. P. Bowman, superintendent for the construction, company, W. C. Rhoades, chief engineer fori the railroad company, M. J. Durand, engiheer in charge for the railroad company, and S. H. Streeter, assistant to Durand, .are on the ground, having arrived here Wednesday. Mr. Peterson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. N. P. Peterson of this city and the bride is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jlenry McKenna, who formerly lived here. Both young pople are exceedingly popular' with theresidents of Salina, who wish them unmeasured happiness. The bridegroom is prominent in all the activities in which he engages, being a live member of the American,' Legion and president of the North Sevier High Aluimn organization. , Mr. and Mrs. Peterson are spending their honeymoon in the northern part of the state and will make their home in Salina. They were given a wedding reception at the home of Mr. Petersons sister, Mrs. Alfred Monson, in More than forty members of the Ladies Literary club gathered at the F. A. Mattsson home Wednesday and spent a most enjoyable afternoon. The maip feature was the intensely inter- esting program given, among the numbers being a paper on the life of Clara Barton, by Mrs. Chas. Nielson, a piano solo, Con Amore, by Mrs. J. P. Following the program Mrs. Mattsson invited Ithe guests to inspect her new home which has recently been finished. At the end of this journey the guests were taken to the banquet room where a delicious luncheon was served. Carlisle, the popular station agent for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad company,- is at the Salina hospital where he is receiving attention for serious body injuries he sustained while at work yesterday afternoon. Mr. Carisle sustained several broken ribs, injured hips and severe body bruises and cuts and at first it was believed that he was seriously injured internally. This morning, however, conditions are more favorable and the injured man is rest, ing fairly well. The accident which placed Mr. Carlisle in the hospital happend yesterday afternoon. He was in the act of handling one of the large platform trucks heavily loaded with freight consigned for northern points. Just as the freight train was passing the station, the truck got beyond control of Mr. Carlisle and forced him towards the moving train. In his endeavor ito avert disaster he made a heroic effort to check the truck he was handling, but failed and he was crowded against the moving train. Before the train could be stopped Carlisle waa crushed between the truck and train and his body was whirled around several times, being bruised and crushed by th6 projecting irons on the freight cars.
