Yet this day besides being the anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence and thereby the natal day of the United States, is notable in American history for several other reasons. It was on July 4, 1636, when Rodger Williams founded Providence, R. I.; July 4, 1744, the Blue Ridge Mountain country was bought from the Indians; July 4, 1734, Colonel George Washington surrendered Fort Necessity to the French and their Indian allies; on the same day Benjamin Franklin was a delegate at a conference with the Six Tribes and predicted the future union of the colonies; on July 4, 1756, occurred Braddocks disastrous defeat; July 4. 1777, Roonesboro, Ky., was attacked by the Indians, and the terrible Wyoming Valley massacre occurred; July 4, 1778, Major George Rogers Clarke captured Kaskaskia from the British; July 4, 1845, the Texas convention voted annexation to the United States; July 4, 1848, the independence of California was declared; July 4, 1826, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died; July 4, 1831, James Monroe died; July 4, 1848, work was started on Washington Monument; July 4, 1861, President Lincoln asked Congress for 400,000 men to defend the Union; July 4, 1864, President Lincoln received word of the victory at Gettysburg and the capture of Vicksburg. These with other incidents of minor moment, have made July 4th notable in American history. OUR PROSPERITY to the United States Chamber of Commerce there is a motor car in operation in the United States for every seven inhabitants of the country. Eight billions of dollars are spent annvlally for automobiles. Two billions go for new cars and the balance for gasoline, repairs and accessories. There are 17,500,000 motor cars in use in the United States according to the figures presented. According Without going into a discussion of the economic effects of the motor industry, ft is shown that during the rise of the motor area in America saving deposits have nearly doubled, individual bank deposits have more than tripled and life insurance in force has increased two and a half times. One of the first acts which strikes the average tourist to Europe is the scarcity of motor cars. In Bulgaria there are no more automobiles than in the .average small American city. No where across the Atlantic is there anything like the proportionate number of automobiles as in America. Here may be found another reason why radicalism does not grow and prosper in America. Our automobiles are not owned principally by the wealthy as in Europe. The greater proportion of them belong to the farmer, the teacher, the mechanic, the clerk, the small merchant, the railroad man, and so on. They are indicative of the progress and general prosperity of America, all the more significant that in addition to growing automobiles, we have been growing savings bank accounts, individual bank deposits and life insurance at the same time. Bolshevism will not prosper under conditions which produce in a nation such prosperity and progress among all classes of citizens. REPRESENTATIVE Scissors and Paste Column o o A dispatch from Franc; says that if the interallied debts were suddenly paid, the United States would be economically upset. No doubt that is the reason they are holding out on us. A house up in New York State re- cently was struck four times by lightening in one night, which would seem to indicate that it is a very attractive place. I REPUBLIC NOT A DEMOCRACY The National Republic (Washington) calls attention to the fact that those who loosely use the word democracy as descriptive of our form of government are as far astray as those who would call it an autocracy. Ours is a representative republic, writes Geo. B. Lockwood, in the July number of the National Republic. It avoids the extremes of potential tyranny implied in the words democracy and autocracy, as politically applied the tyranny of the individual and the tyranny of the mass. The representative in such a government is something more than a mere agent or deputy of his constituency. The member of Congress represents not merely the state or district from which he hails, but the whole country. The doctrine that a member of the House or Senate should support any measure demanded at a given time by what may seem to be a majority of his own constituency, no matter what his opinions or convictions as to what the effect of the measure might be upon the general welfare, is a degrading theory which has been advanced in recent years by demagogues. No man who does not do in his public service that which he believes to be just and right, in the light of his knowledge, rather than the immediate expedient thing is fit to be in public life, continues the editor of the National Republic.
