The safest refuge during a thun derstorm is inside an automo bile with an all metal body, to a Michigan State College safety specialist, David G. Stenicke. But if youre not near an auto when the storm bits, Steinicke said the best place to head for is a large metal or metal frame building. If you cant find in door shelter, keep away from small sheds and shelters in an exposed area. Isolated trees, wire fences, hilltops and open spaces also are dangerous to be near dur ing an electrical storm, he add ed. Seek shelter in a cave, i depression in the ground or a heavily wooded area. If youre Indoors when the storm strikes, keep away from metal objects and open doors and windows. ' James Goss Family Is Here for Visit ' SETS Training in .traffic safety and driving rules from the first grade on through the twelve grades of school was stressed at the safety conference held in San Francisco last week, according to Ross C. Bowen, who attended the conference upon the special invitation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The conference was called by President Eisenhower in an effort to pei feet citizens organizations throughout the country to arouse interest and try to stop the terrific death toll from traffic accidents, as well as reduce property damage through intensified driver training courses. The conference was attended 900 people by approximately lrom the six western states. Included in the roster of speakers at the convention were Governor Pyle, assistant to President Eisenhower, of Washington, D. C.; Governor Knight of California; and the mayor of San Francisco, and many others, who discussed the many serious phases of traffic. During 1955 there were nearly deaths throughout " the 40,000 United States caused from traffic accidents, as well as one and one-hal- f million serious injurf ies and four and nplllion dollars loss in property damage Every month for the past 14 months, tins toll has increased approximately 15 percent over the previous year. Plans are to organize a Citizens Safety Council on a state basis and to further organize other groups in the communities throughout the counties of the state, Bowen reports. The cooperation of civic organizations, the press, PTA organizations, city and county officials, law enforcement officers, and every citizen, is asked to help curtail, to some degree, the tremendous traffic toll, Bowen stated. It is hoped that this organization will be started within the near future, Bowen stated, and that every person will realize that it is a personal responsibility to aid in the reduction of traffic accidents. Mr. Bowen was accompanied to San Francisco by his wife.
