Show r THK IJKK mines and mining Stocks. Listcrn people h ue little ida of practical mining, and generally liny Mocks blindly, taking evriy thing n faith. Then are three kinds of mines, includin' the "wildcat" species. The first is tin "ore shipper," or the mine that has passed the speculative stage and is shipping ore to the mills, out of which is paid dividend'. I he mines are usual ly owned In one or a few individuals, and the slock is rarely placed on the market. Sometimes this is done for puror to swinposes, to freeze out dle the public. The second class is the mine that is partly developed and is nearly on a paying basis, with bright prospects. This stock is put upon the market for speculative purposes, and the stock advances or declines according to the indications of the mine as the work progresses. When "rich ore" is struck the stock rises in value according to the report. The vein may be only a few inche- - thick, and when this has been worked through the stock takes a downward tumble. If, however, the vein is found to be several feet thick, the stock goes up out of sight to two or three hundred dollars a share within a dav. The few on the "inside determine the thickness of the vein with a diamond drill, and of course know whether to buy or sell. The outside public stand no show It is about like buying a lottery whatever. stock-jobbin- g part-owne- rs duties more and more onerous and difficult. The outbreak of war in that legion, however, has added suddenly ami greatly to the labors and responsibilities of the consulate, especially so since British interests in the I ransvaal have been left in charge of our representative at Pretoiia, the Boer capital ( Kertiues or proposals for peace, should any he made, from either of the opposing nations will have to he communicated through the American conu He will have charge of the records ami archives of the British consulate during the period of hosti ities, and it will he his duty to protect the lives and property of L iglidi in the Transvaal so far as possible. -- non-combata- nt Fortunately our representative at Pretoria at this critical peroid is a man especially well qualified to manage the affairs of the position with tact, vigor ami ability. Mr. Charles L. Macrum was appointed con- sul at Pretoria in June, He is about thirty-fou- r ye.u of age. He was horn near Pittsburg, Penn., but previous to bis appointment at Pretoria had resided for some years at Fast Liverpool, Ohio, where he was man. His father, Mr. ager of a Nathaniel Macrum, is cashier of the Last Liverpool National Bank, and the family are prominent in the social affairs of the town. During his term of service at Prc lorii Mr. Macrum hts given excellent satis- fiction to the State Department, and it is b lieved that he will prove equal to all the demands that may be made upon him under the trying circumstances in which he is now 1K9X. glass-factory- placed. tssiit's 1 1 ticket. The third class is the undeveloped The promoter "prospect, or "wildcat. sells the green goods stock as long as the verdant people will buy. I le promises in his highly colored "market letters to the property with the money thus obtained But this is rarely done. He prefers to organize a new company and sell more stock. The dividing lines between this class of "mining men and the seller of counterfeit money is very narrow. One of the greatest swindles ever perpetrated in the west was the bunco game of the notorious "Brick Pomeroy and his associates,' called the "Great Divide Tunnel. The catch was to run a tunnel under the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and tap the rich gold deposits said to be at the base of the mountain. The people who bought stock in such a scheme no doubt believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow This was years ago, but similar schemes are being worked in that state now. de-dcvel- op so-call- ed OUR CONSUL IN BOLRLAND. Owing to the large number of Americans w'ho have been attracted to the goldfields of the Transvaal during the past few years, and the large amount of American capital invested there, aggregating millions, the post of American consul at that point has become increasingly important and its MORE MATINEE STARS.
