Still not far hack in the past conference week meant seeing the thrifty Home Dramatic company iu the Green Lanes of England or Streets of New York or any old play that had been played in every hamlet in the state. The managers realize these days that the couutry people like to see something new and something other than Salt Lake companies ; and while the passing of the Eighteenth Ward company has left eager seekers after histrionic fame, none have been found equal to taking their places. Next week at both play houses an excellent programme ha9 been arranged. At the Grand Theatre Chas. E. Blaneys A Boy Wanted, will play all week. At the Salt Lake Theatre James ONeill will play in repertoire. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights he Wednesday and Friday plays Monte Cristo, nights Irvings great play The Dead Heart will be given, and Saturday afternoon he presents The Courier of Lyons. ONeill is an engaging and thrilling actor, who is rising to better work than he has yet done. Week after next Harry Corson Clarke, Salt Lakes old time favorite, comes to the Grand with his play What Happened to Jones. Clarke has been enjoying prosperous business throughout the Northwest especially since reorganizing his support. It is pleasant to note that Olive Hoff and Charles Charters, two popular members of this seasons stock company at the Grand, are members of Clarkes organization, whichalso includes such players as J. B. Polk, John Allison, C. W. Terriss, H. S. Northrop, Phillip Calvert, Mrs. Adele Clarke, Miss Marian Barney, Lillian Norris, Clara Rainford and Maud Allison. Chas. E. Blaneys big extravaganza success, A Boy Wanted, will be Manager McGarvies attraction at the New Grand next week. This introducing the latest bright farce is songs, dances and sayings. It is said to be about as funny, clever and lively combination as could be desired ; the fun is constant, contagious and never ceasing, and everybody can be in the merriest mood during the three hours of its progress. The incidents of the play are supposed to deal with the history of a theatrical company in financial straits. The company is very efficient and includes many, bright people new to this region. up-to-dat- e, McGarvie, manager of the New Mr. H. F. Grand, has arrived in St. Josph, Mo., he has been elected assistant director general of the St. Joseph jubilee. He has taken immediate charge of the work and begun to formulate plans for it. That he will make a success, if given proper backing and latitude, there can be no question. Interest is increasing iu the Melba concert daily. Logan, Ogden, Provo, Park City and many other of the smaller towns of the state are preparing to semi delegations of music lovers to the feast. In this city it is considered the greatest event since Patti and at the low prices fixed for admission few people who are musically iucliued will stay away. Professor Kerr of the Brigham Young College is advising all his pupils to come. Professor Thatcher will take his classes from this city iu a body aad also his classes iu Logan, which consists of over fifty pupils, will go. Professor Lewis, leader of the Logan choir, will endeavor to bring that entire body of singers. This will make the contingent from Logan a large one. The same interest is manifested in Ogden, Provo and the other cities mentioned and Melba is promised a great audience composed of people who can appreciate every liquid note. The Estedfodd program has been issued. It will be noticed next week in thiscolumu. The Welsh Prize Singers will give a concert in the Tabernacle next Saturday evening, April 9th. This company consists of selected voices from the prize winners at the Worlds Fair. The personel of the company is as follows : Sopranos, Madam Miles, Beynon, Miss Beatrice Evans. Contraltos, Miss Ceiueven Jones and Miss Annie Lewis. Tenors, Richard Thomas and Thomas Stevens. Basso, Harry Evans. Mr. John Beynon is musical director. Miss Mary A. Davis is a violinist, who has lately been added to the company. The program will consist of operatic selections, Welsh airs and popular ballads and choruses. The choir will sing Glorious Songs of Freedom and Worthy the Lamb, under Prof. Stephens leadership. From indications, this noted body of singers will have a successful Their music is characteristic and engagement. pleasing. Mr. George W. Thatcher, Jr. and Prof. C. M. Harris will give a con- cert in the Congregational Church, corner First South and Fourth East, next Thursday evening. Mr. Thatcher is a baritone singer of rare sweetness and power. He is artistic in his methods and talented in his work. Salt Lakers will be surprised to know they have in their midst a musician of such excellence.
