Show THE BEE. 3 s It is a mistake to think that the are sleeping or that the adminis gold-bug- scbemc tration is wholly engrossed with the settlement of international probebns. Mark Hanna has established a bureau at Washington City, ostensiblyin the interest of the silver cause. It is the latest and by far the smoothest scheme undertaken up to date by the advocates of the gold standard. Letters, circulars and printed sheets are being prepared and sent out to all the known ilver papers of the west and middle west. The 'rjdhtter is apparently of the free coinage kind. and the arguments advanced purporCto be in favor of the restoration of silver as a money metal ; but the real object is to foment trouble, arouse distrust amTcause a split in the silver forces. It is the intention of administration politicians, in this way, to make Populists suspicious of silver Republicans, to make silver Republicans believe that Democrats are not keeping faith with them, to make Democrats believe that the others are trying to control the combination in the interest of tariff legislation, to play upon former differences and prejudices and thus get up a general quarrel. This will enable McKinley Republicans to recalFmany of their former political associates, and it is only through such areunion that the administration can hope to reconstruct and again control the Republican party in the west. It is a neat piece of work and will catch many unsuspecting silver men and papers. Mr. Hanna, it is said, prefers this plan to that of buying silver papers outright ; but he is negotiating with a few formerly identified with the party, believing that by making a gradual change, they will be able to carry many of their readers back to the Republican fold with them. If any one imagines that the gold people are asleep or that their attention is altogether centered in Spain he is mistaken. They intend to manage the American army and the silver forces too, if possible ; and with money and willing tools it does seem that almost anything is possible these days. An alleged hermit by the name of Witch has been terrorizing the w,tch people of Goshen, this state. For many years he was looked upon as queer but harmless. Recently, however, he attacked David shotEvans, a neighbor, with a double-barrellegun. This led to his capture and present incarceration in the Provo jail. Witch is now thought te lie insane, being in constant fear of the Mormons. One of the first things he did after being locked up, says the Enquirer, was to indite a friendly letter to Judge Powers. This has created a general impression that Witch is a reader of the Deseret News, and may enable the attending physicians to more easily determine the cause of his malady. He also permitted himself to be interviewed for publication, and, while he said nothing about splitting the Democratic party up the back, his previous attack upon a man by the name of David Evans showed that he was working along the same line. He took occasion to remark that his capture was one of the most audacious, diabolical, unjustice acts He refused to ever perpetrated upon mankind. discuss the local political situation and made no but otherwise his reference to ring rule; symptoms are similar to those with which the Salt Lake public is already acquainted. As is usual in such cases he imagines every body is crazy but himself. Often it assumes the form of calling other people tricksters or pointing to some The people of one else as a political boss. Goshen doubtless feel better that their man Witch has been apprehended. aoshen d want you fellars to toe the mark from now on. If I ketch any ot you driving fast, spitting on the sidewalk or out after sundown, Ill pull you. Do you hear? Pm going to get even. See? See here; I destroyed and her' crew murdered in the same way a year or two ago because it was believed that the craft had carried supplies to the starving islanders. In civilized warfare such things are not done but Spain is not waging a civilized war ; for the nation that employs a Wevler will scuttle a ship ; the power that permits the outrage of women will wink at the murder of mariners. Honorable warfare, even in an unjust cause, may be tolerated, but the methods of the assassin, of the firebug, of the Apache, of the Turk, are hellish. No government that adopts them will' hesitate at an v crime; it will not scruple to lie with a smiling face while it looks for a vulnerablevspot to plant its daggar. incident relieved the con- monotony of the eiference at the Knutsford the other afternoon. Leading Democrats were present from all parts of the state, officers and members of the state, county and city committees, The Ruje An amusing anti-fusio- - n and others who were just Democrats. In the assembly were the editor and manager of the Herald, an organ ground in this city. Before proceeding to business the manager of the Herald, by virtue of a little brief authority, announced that newspaper men should withdraw and personally requested Mr. John Hanson, chairman of the Salt Lake county executive committee, member of the city committee, secretary of the Democratic senate, etc. etc., to leave the room because of his connection with the News. Hanson wondered as he went why the editor and manager of the Herald were allowed to remain under that rule. There is nothing to wonder about. It was not in violation of any rule that thev remained. Nor was there a man at the meeting who would have objected to them on such grounds.. The rule was simply to exclude newspaper men. -- - Subscribe for The Bee, Telephone 651 P. O, Box 630.
