It is contended by some people mountable obstacle in the way of sincere Mormons becoming true and loyal citizens. The Mormon theocracy is the only Government which they recognize or to which they acknowledge any real allegiance. Its leaders claim to rule on earth by direct command of God Almighty, who will sustain them in all things, fight all their battles victoriously, and give them triumph in the end.. The repeated failures of the element to obtain Congressional legislation their peculiar doctrine of against polygamy, has always been cited as evidences of Gods interference in their behalf, and even now, since the passage and trial of the Edmunds Bill, the masses are assured by the priesthood that this measure is only a trial to test their faith and endurance, which will work ultimately to their benefit. They are taught to believe implicitly that the time is not far distant when the Mormon power will be in the ascendant in these United States, and that it will destroy trie present Republican non-Morm- on Government and establish a theocracy in its place. The present Mormon Government is simply a perfect copy of the ancient theocratic systems, which taught that the spiritual being is of greater importance than the temporal office; the two should be merged into one, with the latter interest of course subordinate. Talk with a Mormon on this subject and he will say that because Heaven is higher than earth, heavenly things must be of more importance than earthly ones, and consequently there is no necessity for two sets of rules the greater are enough. Perhaps I cannot better explain the spirit and designs of the Mormon theocracy than by a quotation from the records of a brotherhood or . that the law was the inauguration of class legislation, and consequently it would now be the right thing for the Government to Council organized by Brigham Mormon from soon after the Saints entered prevent immigrants Young landing on the shore of America the valley. This Council assumWithout discussing the merits of ed the most extraordinary powers, the question, whether or no an act acting the part of Legislature, Exebe constitutional that prohibits cutive, Judiciary and Church Assemforeigners of any class from enter- bly. The quotation referred to is ing within our boundaries, it may as follows: This Council is claimed Anti-Chine- be se profitable to inquire what grounds exist to make it desirable for Government interference with Mormon immigration. No person will deny, that in order to promote the welfare of our Nation, it is necessary that those who seek an asylum within its borders should not be of an immoral or dangerous class, and they should bo willing to identify themselves with the best interests of the country, by becoming its loyal citizens, ft has been fully demonstrated that a certain plass of foreigners have infused new life and vigor into American blood, but this element has invariably renounced completely all allegiance to the mother countries, and become dutiful children of their adopted land. to be the Municipal Department of the kingdom of God set upon the earth, and from which all law emanates for the rule, govern-an- d control of all nations, kingdoms, tougues and peoples under the whole HeaVens ; but not to control the pries hood , but to counsel, deliberate arid plan for the general good and upbuilding of the kingdom of God upon the earth. It must be remembered that this piece of bombast was framed and adopted by a band of outlaws, who were exiled from civilization because they would not place themselves in accord with the laws of the country and the spirit of Republican freedom. And the ideas embodied in it are just as strong to day, yes, they have become even more intensified by that slavish sub and declared -- servience to ecclesicastical authority which is so thoroughly inculcat. ed by the Mormon priesthood And in addition to swearing allegiance to the theocracy which is superior to all governments the Mormons take a most solemn oath to avenge the death of Joseph and Hiram Smith upon the American Nation. So terrible. is this oath which is a part of the Endowment ceremonies, that the few who have dared reveal it openly have prudently placed themselves beyond reach of the penalty of its infringement blood atone- ment. A gentleman who has carefully studied the subject fur a number of years thus briefly and succintly sums up the entire matter. ! The Mormon theocracy is a gigantic fraud, which holds in utter contempt any law that conflicts with the will of its leaders. These leaders claim that whatever they now profess to be a religious duty, or whatever they may hereafter declare to be such, tlie United States cannot legally interfere with. They practice as a religious rite what in anyother part of the Union is held to be a felony and so punished. They import annually thousands of the scum of Europe to be their slaves. They rule their own people with an iron hand and rob them unmerci-fully- . They perpetually defy the naturalization and election laws of the United States. They keep their people poor and deny them everything like a gen- eral education. They believe in human slavery in polygamy, and in every atrocity which false priests have, since the beginning of time practiced and preached to keep in degradation and submission the poor of earth. They arc destroying every hallowed association, and every ennobling influence of home. They are the public and avowed enemies of free institutions, and among their people, they cultivate perjury in order that the laws may be defeated. The question now is simple enough. Can a people who are solemnly pledged to obey this theocracy. in all things temporal as well as spiritual, be considered a moral class, or the element from which loyal citizens can be expected? It seems to us that the question can be answered very readily. . 1 The Mamlard F o To any lady who will send us within 30 days the names and address of 25 ladies who would be y likely to take an interest in the question, we will send the Standard free for one year. Those people who imagine that the Edmunds Bill has settled the Mormon question, and will accomplish the regeneration of Utah will do well to read and ponder on the subjoined facts. Since the passage of the bill, the number of polygamous marriages contracted weekly have increased instead of diminished. Some of the men in authority openly boast that the practice can never be suppressed, and they also speak in the most contemptuous terms of the Government, whose laws they break so defiantly. And yet, some of these wily priests and bishops who exhort the brethren to shed if need be, the last drop of their blood in defense of the holy doctrine of polygamy, would, if pressed to the wall, and were brought to trial, swear that they had only one wife Notwithstanding the vast amount of literary endeavors expended in elucidating the Mormon problem, the people of the country seem almost as much in the dark as ever, respecting the complex character of this accursed system of government and theology. And until the people do understand the true nature of the monster legislation against it will not be any more successful in the future than in the past. One of the late polygamous marriages was that of a certain elder, who brought his mother-in-lahome as No. 2. Another was that of an old man of over sixty and a child not fourteen years old, under circumstances that would have ensured the lynching of the brute in any other community, and so it goes on to the end of the disgusting chapter. We heard of one instance when a wife who had learned of her husband's polygamous intentions, succeeded in thwarting them, and who warned him that if he persisted in breaking the law, she would deliver him over to the officers of the court. He exhibited the true spirit of Mormonism in his answer to her, The law of God will soon be in full we shall quickly get rid of the Gentiles, and then all such Mormon women as you are will be blood atoned. w force-here- , And that this is not an idle threat is well known by any person who understands the past history of Mormonism. Under the circumstances there is only one thing for the people of the United States to do, and that is to compel Congress to enact more efficient measures than the Edmunds Bill. Speck Notice.
