Show ' 1 ! Dear Standard; Not very long ago two prominent female Mormon missionaries asserted in the East that it was a libel to call the Mormon women Sisters the downtrodden women of Utah, and intimated that the most of the stories that had gone abroad in regard to the degraded and neglected condition of the sex were pure-minde- Gentile fabrications. They had lived long in these valleys of the mountains and were prepared to say that no such women existed in their midst. For the information ofthese missionaries who see with so very different eyes from ours, we subjoin a few facts without note or comment: Last Summer we saw and conversed with a young and intelligent Mormon woman, whose case appeared, to our Gentile apprehension, rather pitable. About ayear before, she had married a rich man who took her home to live with his first wife. I her husband (?) hired a little cabin for her and provided her with the bare necessaries of life until she . should be able to go to work again. Early last tall a delicate looking woman, with a baby in her arms, applied to us for washing. We made some inquiries about her, and learned that she was a Bishop s daughter, and the fourth wife ot a wealthy man; also, that she went out washing nearly every clay in the with her child in her arms, thereby earning the extravagant sum of 50 cents per day. We gave her some work, for which wo took the liberty ot paying a little higher price, We also furnished her with a bundle of baby. It garments for her half-clad we STANDARD. Y' She said that she found itvery hard to get bread for her children, but she seemed to regard all the trials rtf her lot as natural and inevitable. Last Spring we made the of a second acquaintance wife of a wealthy and prominent Mormon. We found her a patient, loving, woman. We admired her virtues, but did not envy her lot. A third wife had so engrossed the regards of the husband (?) that this woman,' the mother of many children, had not only been left alone many months when she needed the most tender care, but she had been left so destitute that when one of her children was sick and supposed tobedying, she had noteven a light in the house by which to see the litte sufferers face as she sat beside him through the long night, nor a penny to buy food or medicine. The facts recorded above are a few of the many instances of a similar nature that have come to our knowledge during our residence is Utah. The ladies who are soskeptical would perhaps like to hear something further with regard to trodden-dow- n women. We are prepared to furnish information, gratis, with regard to a good many other cases that to an untaught Gentile, seem very deplorable, and can in addition furnish uncontradictory evidence that they are not Gentile fabrications. YU Spouse No. 1. not relishing this addition to the family, treated spouse No. 2 very harshly, and finally gave her a severe whipping for smite slight offence. The poor girl sadlWisappointed in her dream of wedded bliss, left her husbands (?) roof and went out to earn her bread as a servant. He closed by saying that none short of the most strict, rigid and streunous laws possible would serve to put a quietous to the beastly practices of the Mormon hierarchy of Utah The Committe then presented strong resolutions against the twin relic, and advocating stringent legislation against it which were unanimously adopted, and the meeting adjourned.
