The geographical position of Salt Lake City, being midway between the Rockv0 Mountains and the Sierra Ne vada, the increased demand for manufactured goods caused by the rapid influx of population, the inexhausta ble resources in iron, lead and coal, the favorable climate for sheep and horned cattle, and the of railroads in construction within its own boundaries and those of adjoining States and Territories are, it seems to us, reasons sufficient to warrant the asumption that this city is destined to become a great manufacturing center. The records of all successful countries and communities furnish indisputable proof that the cause of success is attributable to the encouragement and carrying out of agriculture and manufactures, it being a fact that no country can be truly prosperous that is dependent upon another for the necessaay supplies required by a civilised people. Our resources in lead, iron and coal, and the wool and hides produced should all of them be utilised at home, furnishing thereby employment for thousands of mechanics and artisans in the various branches of industry included in the many uses to which they are applicable, and the complicated method of manipulation. We are not only paying double freight first on the raw material to the point of manufacture, and secondly from thence in a manufactured state to our own doors but we are adopting a suicidal course in not employing our own labor, as we are now paying out our money to support foreign labor when it should be kept at homt and devoted to the encouragement of home manufactures. It may be argued that it is impossible to compete with foreign and domestic manufacturers; such may be the case at first , but it cannot remain that way for any lengthened period; difficulties of the kind have always been encountered in new countries, but invariably are overcome in the practical working out of the problem. Another striking advantage accruing from home manufacturing, is the increase of population engendered thereby, and the consequent ready and profitable market inaugerated for products of the soil, thereby in its train increasing the demand for arable and grazing lands, and so furnishing employment to a large number of agriculturists and stock-raiserThe commonwealth for all these reasons is largely benefitted, as the history of civilization and the growth of all nations that have strictly adhered to the fundamental principles of political economy, plainly demonstrate. This subject is in our opinion one of such vital importance in regard to the future destinies of Utah that it cannot fail to recommend itself to the earnest consideration of all reflecting minds. net-wo- Ex change.
