While word of mouth and jungle drums have always been the traditional way fishermen have received and passed fishing information, there is also a new method. With the spring fishing season underway, the Wildlife Division of Utah Resources (DWR) is providing fishing information through a toll free telephone line and through the Internet. According to Suzzette Fowlks, DWR information specialist, fishermen can now get speedy news on hot places to fish. The information provided for anglers to access comes from biologist and anglers who are willing to report their latest adventures. The toll free telephone line is updated by Friday afternoon each week. The hotline number is (877) 592 - 5169. The information line is toll free, even though its an 877 number, Fowlks said. The traditional 800 and 888 access numbers are apparently all used so the new number was provided to the DWR. The weekly fishing report is also available at the DWR Internet webat located site www.wildlife.utah.govfishing. Fowlks said that reports at this location are generally updated by Thursday afternoon of each week. At the DWRs Fishing Tips page, anglers may send fishing reports for other anglers to read. They can also ask Tom Pettengill fishing related questions. Pettengill is the DWR sport fisheries coordinator. The fishing tips page is available through: www.wildlife.utah.govfishing. "News reports are added to this page almost as fast as we get them, so be sure to check this page for the information, latest fishing Pettengill said. It s (Planting Time! 781-098- Softball season comes to early close for Colorado Northwestern Colorado Northwestern will for- feit the last twelve gan.es of their softball season. Athletic Director Michael Bari announced Tuesday. The season began with only twelve players on the roster, and injuries, ineligibility and personal health issues have caused the number to dwindle. When one player was ruled academically ineligible and another suffered a season-endin- g injury, that put the Spartans dangerously close to being unable to field a team. A softball team must have nine players dressed and available in order to play. By rule, playing with eight is not an option. Rather, it leads to an automatic forfeit. In the last week, it has been discovered that several more players are battling undisclosed personal health issues. Bari said he couldnt be sure there would be enough players available to field a team, nor did he feel it would be in the best interests of some of the athletes to be out on the field. Because new coach Nathan Baker was hired last year well after the recruiting signing date last year, the Spartans suffered a second straight recruiting class that was low in numbers. The previous season Brandy Shumway wasnt hired until August, following the springtime Wilson. Kevin of departure the left position after a Shumway Your Bari also pointed out that even if nine players were healthy, an ingame injury could cause the team to forfeit on the spot, which wouldnt be fair to their opponents or the umpires. Colorado Northwestern forfeited four games against Salt Lake last weekend, and will forfeit e their eight remaining games, series against both Dixie State and Snow College. Coach Nathan Baker said, Im really proud of the teams effort and growth this season. We were put in a difficult situation, and tried to make the best of it. Neither Brandy nor I had the chance to put in a full season of recruiting. When that happens in consecutive seasons, it can be awfully difficult to field a full roster. Many of the players on this years team were athletes on other teams who decided to play softball because players were needed. Baker said he expects next year to be better. With the recruits we have coming in, combined with returners, Im excited about coaching the team next year, Baker said. Colorado Northwestern finishes the softball season winless. four-gam- To Shop For The Highest Quality Plants Join Us For Our Spring Open House! Hunters... We also have to look out for the mental and physical well being of the athletes involved and at this time, we have certain individuals who need to be focused on resolving certain personal issues.
