It is difficult to diagnose, difficult to treat and difficult to live with. Its cause or causes are unknown. CFS is a persistent fatigue of at least six months duration. It has a definite point of onset that is not caused by exertion and is not relieved by rest or sleep. It is accompanied by at least four other symptoms including sore throat, muscle pain, joint pain, headaches, sore lymph nodes, insomnia and a decreased ability to concentrate. It is a disabling complex of symptoms that leaves its victims unable to perform daily activities with their normal level of energy. Other symptoms that are not necessary for a diagnosis of CFS but which commonly afflict its victims are abdominal pain, bloating, chest pain, chronic cough, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness, dry mucous earaches, membranes, irregular heartbeat, jaw pain, muscle stiffness, nausea, night sweats, anxiety, irritability, depression, panic attacks, shortness of breath, skin sensations and weight loss. One of the reasons why CFS is so difficult to diagnose is because many other illnesses, many of them highly treatable, cause the same or a similar set of symptoms. These illnesses include hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, depressive disorders, chronic mononucleosis, bipolar affective disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, cancer, autoimmune disorders, some infections, obesity and substance abuse. In addition, the side affects of many d medications can cause similar symptoms. Partly because CFS is so difficult to diagnose, there have been no studies definitive epidemiology done. Some studies report the condition is most prevalent in white women while others report it is equally distributed across race and gender. One study suggests it is in African more prevalent Americans. It is believed to occur more commonly in persons over age 30 but is not unknown in children and adolescents. There is currently no data to suggest CFS is an infectious disease but it is also impossible at this time to prove it is ' not contagious. Some, researchers i are currently leaning toward a theory of multiple causes of FS, a complex of conditions that must exist together to bring the end result of CFS. Infectious agents such as retroviruses, the Epstein Barr virus or a herpes virus are possible contributors to CFS but are not likely to be the sole cause of me condition. Immune dysfunction is also a suspect in the cause of CFS. There is currently no good evidence to support an autoimmune deficiency severe enough to cause the condition. However, an immune dysfunction may be a contributing factor. Disorders of the nervous system, especially of the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands, may also be contributors to CFS through a hormonal imbalance. Abnormally low pulse and blood pressure are also potential culprits in the formation of CFS. CFS is not only difficult to diagnose and treat, it is also difficult to determine when or even if recovery has occurred. Some people appear to recover completely while others seem to have a partial recovery with periodic return of symptoms. Others become progressively worse doctor-prescribe- Clayton graduates from Field Medical Service School Feb. 21 Adam Clayton, son of n Lori and stepson of Thomas Leverton, graduated from the field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Physical activity suitable to the individual patient's condition is generally prescribed. Acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy and are also frequently used treatments for CFS. Drug therapy for CFS usually involves sleep inducing medications but with a caution that these may well cause unwanted side effects. It may also include nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs to help with the pain of CFS as well as antidepressants and tranquilizers. Some physicians also choose to order antibiotics andor antiviral drugs since infectious agents have not been entirely ruled out. Gamma globulin to boost the immune system may also be prey scribed. drugs, especially antihistamines, are often prescribed since allergies are common in CFS sufferers. Steroids are prescribed in some cases. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages anyone with CFS to NOT do two things: - Do not listen to rumors or pay attention to unsubstantiated literature. There are many of both in the public domain and they do nothing but add to the anxiety of the patient. 2- - Do not use medications, herbal remedies or dietary supplements that are not prescribed by a physician. There are many claims of miracle cures that are simply untrue and are bound to lead to disappointment at best and possib'y to a worsening of the condition or even a new disease. There are two things every person with CFS needs: - Every CFS patient needs the support of family, friends and 6 pm. i Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Safe Handling of Harvested Wild Game Animal Guidelines For Hunters time.
