He was named after two key World War II generals whose courage and determination to win were reflected throughout Doug's life, especially in his last fight with cancer. Doug was the youngest of four children bom to John Ruland and LuDell Leonard Moon. He grew up in Farmington. He attended the University of Utah on a basketball scholarship. While at the "U" he lettered for three years and became the fourth free throw leader in the history of the schtxil. He also served as captain of the basketball team during his senior year. In 1964, Doug made All the Western Athletic Conference team. He was drafted by the then Baltimore Bullets, but he decided he wanted to be a coach. He coached basketball and taught at Uintah and Layton high schools. While at Uintah, his team won the state basketball championship. He was a great teacher of young people. He taught them how to work hard on the basketball court just as he had learned to do on the old, gravel court in his back yard. Doug was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. He married Beth Bodily of Syracuse. They had four children: Troy (Michelle) of Nampa, Idaho; Jeff (Julie) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Lance (Julie) of Layton, and Kirsten (Curt) Nye of Clinton. On March 31. 2(X)0, he married Elaine Tidwell of Salt F.ake City. Doug was a great outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and golf. He loved life and its challenges. He had a sharp sense of humor that an Elizabeth Hall Weist Elizabeth Hall Weist, age 86, passed away on Jan. 7, 2003 at Cherry Hills Health Care Center in Knglewood, Colo, after suffering for many months from Parkinson's Disease. I.habcth was horn June 11, 1916 in Vernal to Marinda Allen and Oison Grow' Hall. She graduated from Uintah High School in 1934 where her favorite sport was women's basketball. She married Carl Fugene (Gene) Weist on August 30. 1936 and raised two sons, Marion and Donald. Liz lived in Venial for 84 years until April 2000 when she moved to Colorado to he near her son after she was disabled hy a stroke. She was active for many years in the Unity Rcbckah Lodge No. 23. Her husband Gene was a Vernal volunteer fireman for 40 years, and Liz was a member of the Lady Fireman's Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Utah State Archeological Society. The Uintah Ilasin Archeological Chapter and enjoyed working with the Lady's Aid Society preparing Election Day dinners. After from retinng Ashton's Bakery Liz's favontc pastimes were working in her yard, family genealogy and Vernal area history. Her ancestors, both the Allens and the Halls, were pioneer settlers in the valley. She is survived hy her children Marion and Donald, her sister Boyd Murray, 70, of Blackfoot, Idaho died Jan. 3, 2003 at his home. Boyd was bom on Feb. 19, 1932 in Jensen to Johnathan Moyes and Verlie Stewart Murray. He attended grade school in Naples and attended Uintah High School in passed Rasmussen delivered hy Catharine Cameron Southam, her grandmother, who was a uudwile. She was one of nine children horn to Charles and and the last surviving member of the family. She passed away peacefully on Jan 4, 2(K)3 at the Uintah C.ue Center where she had lived for the last several years. On Feb. 1939 she married Sterling 13, Hynim Rasmussen in Vernal. She and Sterling lived in California and Nevada for several years until they returned to Venial where they made their home I hey purchased property on Mam Street in Vernal and hmlt the I laming (iotge Motel, wliu.fi they owned and operated themselves fm many years. One of her biggest loves was all her grandchildren and knowing where they were and what they were doing. She loved little children and she loved animals. She was bom Feb. 7, 1941 in Dunham, Ken. to Clyde Conklin Mullins and Elizabeth Ann Vanover Mullins. She was raised in Salt Ltike City. Then moved to the Duchesne area in 1974 where she raised her family. She has lived in Vernal for the past seven years. She devoted her entire life to her six children and her grandchildren. They were the sole reason for her existence. She was a peacemaker, and always put others first. She loved to go fishing. She was a wonderful cook and loved to cook for her family. She made the best biscuits and gravy ever! She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-da- y Saints. She is survived by her children, Kim (Connie) Mullins, Duchesne, Vickie Caldwell, Vernal, Debbie (Mark) Renfro, Vernal, Teresa (Rick) Culley, Tooele, John (Tina) Guest, West Valley City and Elizabeth (Chris) Irvin, West Valley June Fames Stewart Simper Anderson, age 94 passed away Jan. 2, 2003. Lorene was bom July 1, 1908 in Vernal, first child of Alfred and Eunice She married Bowthorpe Simper. Harold Anderson June 18, 1937. TTieir marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Hike LDS Temple. He passed away July 23, 1985. l.orene taught school for 48 years and loxcd teaching. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ ol Latter-daSaints and served in many positions in the Primary. MIA and Relief Society. She and her husband Harold served a Temple Mission. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, square dancing and people. Lorene loved her friends, neighbors and family. In lieu of flowers, please go shoot some hoops with your kids. condolences to the family On Dec. 26, 1952 Boyd married Keitha Nelson in Vernal. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS temple on April 28, 1994. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived in Casper, Wyo. and in 1959 moved to Blackfoot where they raised three children, two sons and a daughter. Boyd was a member of the LDS church. He served as a stake missionary with his wife for two years and was an active home' teacher. He was also a past member of the Elks lodge. Boyd was a mechanic his entire life. He owned and operated Broadway American service station and the 1 st and Holmes service station in Idaho Falls. He retired from the INEEL in 1994 as a journeyman mechanic. He loved to fish, hunt and play cribbage. He especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and June Fames Stewart, age 86, a long time resident of the Uintah Basin died Jan. 7, 2003, at her daughter, Sheilas home in Jensen. She was bom August 3, 1916 in Rexburg, Idaho the eldest daughter of LeRoy Eugene Fames and May Marie Fleming. June received her Bachelors degree from BYU in 1938. She moved to Vernal and taught English and Journalism at Uintah High School. She was a librarian in the Salt Lake City public school system, an Archivist at the Utah State Historical Society; she also taught at the community college in Rangely, Colo. While living in Vernal she was active in community work as a member of the Uintah County Library Board and a member of the Utah Bicentennial Committee. During the Korean War June worked on the local committee formatting the newletters that were sent out to the men serving their country. She always felt that it was the most satisfying community job she ever held because it meant so much to the men. June was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints and has served as a teacher, visiting teacher, and in public affairs. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honorary educational organization. Beaux Arts, Camp Vernal of the DUP and Uintah Poetry Society. Junes love of life and adventure was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She loved to travel and had many wonderful trips with friends, family and grandchildren. June loved the ocean and was able to spend some time on the coast just months before her death. She taught all those that knew and loved her to savor life and new experiences. She will be missed greatly. She is preceded in death by her brother Jack Fames of Idaho Falls and her husband Wiley Edward Stewart of Jensen. June is survived by her sister Wanda Virden of Vacaville, Calif., daughter Roslyn Stewart, son Lloyd W. Stewart of Vernal and daughter Sheila S. Wheeler of Jensen, 10 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren with one more on the way. Funeral services will be held Jan. at 11 a.m. at the Vernal 5th Ward Chapel, 250 N. 200 W. Viewing will be at the Thomson-BlackbuVernal Mortuary. Interment will be in the Jensen Cemetery under the direction of Thomson-BlackbuVernal Mortuary. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Simper, Nathaniel Walton, Vaughn Simper, Duff Anderson and Michael Walton. Compassionate services were provided by Vernal 3rd Ward Relief Society. Interment in the Vernal Memorial Park. Dec. 28, 2002, Chrystal Hansen Smith, 88, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family. Chrystal was bom April 18, 1914 in Ml Pleasant, the daughter of Parley and Fredricka (Brotherson) Hansen. She graduated from high school at the Wasatch Academy and attended Snow College, both in Mt. Pleasant. Before her marriage, Chrystal taught school in Myton on the Ute Indian Reservation. On May 23, 936, Chrystal married T. Nile Smith in Ml Pleasant. They moved to Vernal where their daughter Judy was bom, then to Salt Lake City where their daughter Susan was bom. In 1948, the Smiths moved to Billings, Mont. Chrystal was a dedicated employee of the Hart Albin Store for 40 years. Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles, reading, playing the piano and her gardening and yard work, making her yard the envy of the neighborhood. 1 Chrystal yard twice a week even into her 80s. Survivors include her children, Wilson Judy (Robert) of BallantineAVorden, Mont., Susan (John) Havener of Billings; grandchildren, Wilson of Doug Laurie Ballantine, (Gerald) Timmerman of Billings, Steve (Shelly) Wilson of Ballantine, Debi (Tom) Knutson, of Shepard; six one and a sister, Lucille Lipphardt of Vernal. Her husband, T. Nile Smith preceded her in death; brother. Bill Hansen; sisters, twin Christie B. Hansen, Helen Cluff and Alyce Ashton. Funeral services for Chrystal were held Jan. 2 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Interment in Mountview Cemetery.
