Show AT THE ST. WORLDS FAIR. Karo and Fricele.g Memeotoe. of Colum bu, Loaned by Foreign Go- vernment. lettd, Through the 8tate department at Washing-ton- , Dl rector General Davis has received Information os to tho Columbus mined the government for exhibition, relics, says the Chicago Most of these are documents bearing tho great dlseoverors autograph, now In the possession of the Duke of iierw lek and Alba, w boso ancestors succeeded to the estates granted Columbus by the rulers of Spain. The United States government secured the loan of the treasures by sending W. E. Curtis to Europe as a special envoy, lie was authorized to guarantee the safe transmission, custody and return of the historic collections. The lnvitutlon to exhibit under these conditions was accepted, and a battle-shi- p of the United States navy is now gathering the relies to bring them to this country. Consent to the departure of the Columbiana fiom tbe custody of the owners Is regarded as an extraordinary mark of favor to the Exposition and to the United States government. So valuable are the documents that government guards will bo In charge of them night and day from the time they leave their owners until they are returned at the close of the Fair. Special 6tecl vaults have been constructed for them In the convent of LaHablda at Jackson Park, and armed troops will he stationed there by tho state department for safeguard. Among Ihclnvaluablo manuscripts Is an account, in Columbus writing, of the amount of gold he obtained In Santo Domingo and the mimes of the men to w horn it was afterward sold. Another Is h draft payable to Diego to the admiral, for 100 Tristan, major-domgold Castellanos. The body of the draft exIs the coin needed to pay tho explains that penses of a trip to Seville. An annotation on the draft, evidently of a later date, In the handwriting of Columbus, says; The above amount was deducted from the 150,000 which afterward were given to me at Seville, by order of her highness, to aid me In defraying the expenses, and tho receipt of w hlch I acknow ledged." One of the patbetio stories of the navigators life Is outlined In the manuscript of an argument addressed to Ferdiuaud and Isabella In the year 1500, In which he demands the privileges bestowed upou him as a condition of success In bis expeditions. It In detail the value to the crown of bis achievements, relates the rights to which he was entitled by tho sovereign grants, and asks to he placed In possession of the legal fruits of his peaceful conquest. Vulunble auxiliaries to the Spanish documents are furnished by Pope Leo from tho ai chives of the Vatican. Among these is the hull of Alexander IV, giving to the Spanish sovereigns the same privileges In America that had been granted Portugal on tbe weft coast of Africa. Following this Is a documentary coiitlrmallou of these privileges, praising Columbus for his discovery and dividing the jurisdiction of Spain and Portugal In their conquests of discovery by an imaginary line from the north to the south pole, running 100 miles west of the Azores. In addition are papal letters granting per-- n Isslon to various priests to carry the gospel d lands. One to the heathen of the of these, dated June 25, 1493, and addressed to Father Moyle, who went with Columbus on his second voyage, shows that the church authorities were quick to realize the importance of the discovery. A famous map, Diego Kibera'a Chart of the Universe, dated 1529, In this map the Is also In the collection. outlines of the east coast of tho western hemisphere are shown with reasonable accuracy, omitting the territory north of the Gulf of .Mexico, brazil Is shown within easy sailing distance of Africa, and nothing Kdrawn of the western shores of the continents except Central Americas coast. As there early promised to be a demand for these Souvenirs that would render them very valuable in the hands of speculators, the Exposition Authorities deciJcd to place the price at $T.Q0 for ach Coin and sell them direct to the people, thus realizing $ 5,000,000, and using the additional money for the further development of the Fair. Considering the fact that there were bu 1 5,000,000 of these coins to be distributed aniomg 63,000,000 people, in this country alone (to say nothing of the foreign demand,) and that many have already been taken, those wishing to purchase these mementoes of our Countrys Discovery and of the grandest Exposition ever held, should secure as many as they desire at once. Realizing that every patriotic American will want one or more of these coins, and in order to make it convenient for him to get them, we have made arrangements to have them sold throughout the country by all the leading Merchants and Banks. A number of butter samples were recently scut to a chemist for analysis. The butter wrappers, after being discarded, were left lvlng the upon laboratory table all night. The next morning the chemist found that ton of the twelve wrappers had been completely cleaned by mice, while two remained untouched. Having made his analysis he found that of tho twelve samples ten wero pure, natural butter, the other two bclug margarine, and this was contained In the two wrappers which had been left untouched by tlio mice. Not knowing how to explain tho occurrence, the chemist placed a quantity of butter in one coiner of the di-- h and In the other corner a similar quantity of margarine, lie then placed the dish on tho table until next morning, when the natural butter had disappeared; the margarine showed no traces of baviug been disturbed, except where It lmd been very gingerly tested.
