Our city authorities are preparing fur further improvement upon our streets this fall; notices are out for bids to lay something over three hundred rods of culverts, and no doubt but the city will appropriate and expend more than the amount of the regular street tax. The interest that has and is being taken in this branch of improvement by the pres-en- t City Council, is certainty commend-able- , not only because of the outlay of means for io beneficial a purpose, but because they have sought, and succeeded to a certain extent, in correcting some of the mistakes of former councils, in procrastinating and allowing some of our citiaons to continue to enclose and otherwise obstuct the streets and sidewalks of the city; of course it has re quired a determination on the part of the city fathers to make much headway in this matter, and not until a suit was had ia the District Court could persons looking to their personal interests, and not to the public weal, be convinced of their error. However, imagination bearing upon this question, might have been taken as facts, and men are sometimes loth to give np their private opinions wheu that pinion becomes fixed, notwithstanding they may have reached that state ol mind by tbe misrepresentation of others. As to the publio or authorized surveys of our city, some say that tbe city fathers have changed their minds, and caused a every few years, when the facts! are, and the records of the city attest it. - But two surveys have ren made Of the streets and block of The original or first was made in the year 1838;7 by James C. Show, county surveyor, commencing at the south ud of the city and extending to what is s now Ninth North street, and east to he street where the railroad was and west to Third West street, east of the street mentioned, was firs' run off by a Cornu ittee of the City Council without compass or chain, and thus had to he Corrected. That is the east bench part of the city. The Council,1 therefore, in the year 1883 ordered a survey ot the city, which was carried' out by the committee on streets and allevs.'Rcrcs P. SnLf.l and Charles Monk, the work being done by That Couniy Surveyor Daniel Stai k. was a re survey of the 8now survey, and die only too, but an original survey of the East Bench part of the city. Of course this step should have Itcen taken many years before, and would have saved confusion; otlieV Cities,' and Paysob , . have bad to their streets, but it was lone at an earlier period, when there were less improvements made, and which nad to tie changed, than' ia tbe case in tin-cit- viz.-Prov- ouf city.
