The procedure, which reduces pain in surgical patients, has experienced good results at the local hospital during the past six months under the direction of Chuck Loving and Mike post-operati- Sutherland. Mr. Loving and Mr. Sutherland are partners in Intermountain Anesthesia, a Tooele based-gou- p that procides anesthetists to small hospitals throughout Utah and Idaho. The group presently serves five other hospitals besides Tooele, including Vernal, Roosevelt, Layton as well as St Anthony and Ashton, Idaho. Epidural narcotics was pioneered in the late 1970s, but widespread use was delayed partly because of lack of a preservative-fre- e morphine. "No question about it, epidural narcotics is the greatest advancement in anesthetics in recent years, said Mr. Loving. The procedure involves placing the morphine in the epidural space a sack-lik- e space that runs from the base of the skull to the tail bone and lies beneath the spinal column. Medications injected in this space can block pain signals before they reach the brain, according to Mr Sutherland. Use of the epidural varies from patient to patient, according to Mr. Sutherland, and is used in emergency situations as well as for critically ill patients. "A patient will only get what is necessary for the pain. Mr. Loving pointed out that the amount of pain a patient feels after surgery has significant effect on recovery. That is important for three reasons. If pain is reduced, the patient is more likely to follow-u- p with other surgeries if necessary, Mr. Loving noted. Reduction of surgical pain allows the patient to become active sooner. "And of course this usually means that the patient will save money because he will have to spend less time in the hospital and under doctors care." ."We work very closely with the doctors at the hospital, Mr. Sutherland explained. "We discuss any procedures, what we are doing and why. They ask for our input and we ask for theirs. Its a good working relationship that we have established with the doctors and the entire medical staff. The two anesthetists said that use of epidurals is extremely popular in the area. "Approximately 60 to 70 percent of the delivery patients will have an epidural. They are not that popular elsewhere in the United States because it is a relatively new field, Mr. Sutherland said. Although there are many new kinds of drugs available, Mr. Loving says morphine is still the superior analgesic for pain. While any says the epidural use isnt long enough or strong enough approximately 5 milligrams to create addictioa The pioneering of epidural narcotics by Intermountain Anesthesia firm as has helped the Tooele-baseone of the largest anesthetic groups in the United States. "Our goal has always been to be very selective in hiring our personnel, Mr. Loving said. "All eight members in our group are board d approved." He continued, "We have tried to select people with exceptional tech- nical training and with several years experience when we hire them. Mr. Loving, who has been in Tooele for four years, has practiced clinical anesthesia for 10 years. He received his nursing degree from the University of Hawaii and had six years training in Vermont. Mr. Sutherland has been involved in clinical anesthesia for six years, three years locally. He is a graduate of Ricks College and trained in Minneapolis. While there is a slight risk in anesthestics (about one in 10,000 peole have serious reactions) there have been no major complications since Intermountain Anesthetics has been practicing at Tooele Valley Hospital.
