"It will take the cooperation of the federal and state governments and individual growers, if adequate control of grasshoppers is to be realized, explained Mr. Stephens. The Utah state legislature appropriated $1 million with the legislative intent that it be used to control grasshoppers on state lands, he added. Presently, there is only $1 million in federal money available through the Animal and Plant . United States. During 1984, the grasshopper and Mormon cricket infestation caused approximately $11 million dollars damage over 2,922,020 acres of Utah land. This included one million acres on BLM; 22,320, Forest Service; 48,040 on military and Bureau of Indian Affairs land; 12,320 on Wildlife and National Parks; 1.5 million of private land; and 201,220 of stand land. "We need all the help we can get from the federal government if we are to adequately control grasshoppers in Utah, said Mr. Stephens. The state agricultural depart-- , ment has an ad hoc committee in jilace to coordinate the efforts of all growers, state and federal officials in an effort to gain effective control for a five year period.
