Show A 15 Grantsville Thinclads Win Union Meet Grantsville opened up the cinder season with a convincing 90-4- 9 tromping of Union in boys action while the Lady Cougars nipped the Cowgirls 1 in the region opener last week at Union. Darren Cook led the way for the Cowpokes with three first place 63-6- finishes while Thomas Winden garnered two. Cook captured top honors in the 100 meter (10.90) and 200 meter (24.25) as well as teaming up with Tim Keller, John Elmer and Kevin Orgill to bring home a first in the 400 meter relay with a time of 46.79. Winden cruised home with top honors in the 1600 meter (4:59.74) and the 3200 meter (11:27.00). Keller also captured a first place with a 55.9 in the 400 meter dash while Orgill garnered a gold in the 300 meter hurdles. Tooeles Dan Emery slides Into second in the juniors successful steal attempt in the middle innings of Tuesdays season opener. The Buffs overcame a 0 deficit for a 4-- 2 victory over Ogden in Tooele. Tooele will face Grantsville Friday at 1 1 a.m. on the Cowpokes home field. 2-- Buffs Nip Ogden 4-- 2 In Opener It was a perfect seasonal opener for the Tooele Buff baseball squad. The field was in excellent condition, sun was shining, big crowd, including a KSL reporter and a good opponent in Ogden. The Buffs made the best of their opportunity when Pat Kernan doubled home the winning run in the fifth as Tooele edged Ogden, in Tooele Tuesday. The win boosted the Buffs record to 0 while the Tigers dropped to 0-Ogden had previously dropped 4-- close decisions to Layton and Viewmont. It marked the coaching debut of Buff head coach Dean Stringham and it couldnt have been a sweeter win. This was a good team effort, Stringham noted. "We hung in there, kept our composure and came back. It was effort. Tm tickled to death for them, not for me, added the veteran coach. "We had great support today from Buff fans and we treated them to a good game. Im glad for the kids, school and community that they came out and we played a good game. They (the kids) showed me today they want to play some baseball. Stringham, despite the hard fought victory, still wanted to keep everything in proper perspective. "This is only the first game and one game does not make a season, Stringham said. "Weve got a long way to go and this is a good step forward. Its a good win, especially against a team like Ogden who is always tough. But still were a young ball team and weU still need a little maturity to be a good ball club. Its going to take some time. Kernans effort came a frame after the Buffs knotted the game at Mike Graham Behind sparked Tooele with a lead off single. The Buff junior stole second and jaunted home and an RBI single by Travis Lohnes. After a ground out Lohnes to second, Dan Emery ripped a double, scoring Lohnes from second. 2-- 2-- 0, An inning later, Mike Merino led off the frame with a pinch hit single to get things going. Merino swiped second and cruised home on Kernans run sooting clout. Tooele added an insurance run in the sixth when Emery led off with another two bagger and scored on another Merino single. But offense wasnt the only spark for the Buffs. Starting hurler Rob Kowalski and relievers Alan Vonhatten and Lohnes kept the Tiger hitters at bay, yielding only blooped his second double of the afternoon into right field. But Lohnes preserved the win when he got a Tiger hitter to ground to second. Tooele will travel west to meet county rival Grantsville Friday at 11 a.m. on the Cowpokes home field. Mike Anderson and Brad Butcher also finished with top honors in the 800 meter (2: 16) and 100 meter hurdles (15.60), respectively. The 1600 meter relay team of Jason Patterson, Paul Cook, Craig Ratcliffe and Dennis Gilbert cruised in with a time of 3:58 to capture first. In other running events, Steve Mason garnered a second place in the 100 meter hurdles (19.62) while Patterson (1600 meters), David Chadwick (100 meter dash) and Dave Yaden (200 meter dash) all captured third places for the Cowpokes. In the field events, four Cowboys all grabbed top honors. Mike Bussard seized the javelin top spot with a toss of 163 feet and five inches while Kirk Matthews (145 feet-- 9 inches) and Bruce Hiatt (142 feet-- 3 inches) completed a clean sweep. Jeff Barrus high jumped for a gold finish while Dave Francom led the field in the shot put with a heave of Tony Hammond also apprehended first in the pole vault with a 10 foot three inch vault while Ratcliffe followed with a 3 vault for third. Cowboys grabbed second and third place in the discus with Francom (110-4- ) and Tom Green (105-10- ) while Gilbert (19-3- ) and Mason (19-1- ) did the same thing in the long jump. In the womens division, six Cowgirls captured top honors but it 5-- 9 44-6'- 9-- wasnt enough as the Cougars edged Grantsville in the score. Jill Anderson led the way for the Cowpokes with first place finishes in the 800 meter (2:52.7) and 1600 meter (6:26) runs while Erika Seaquist seized a first in the 100 meter hurdles with a 18.25 and a second in the 300 meter hurdles (55.62). Amy Jackson followed right on Andersons heels in the 800 meter with a 2:58 for second while Sara Tate did the same thing in the 1600 with a 7: 15. Karen Bell raced to a first place in the 400 meter dash with a 1:13.51. Tonya Townsend and Sheila Wells also acquired third place finishes in the 200 meter and 100 meter dash, respectively. In the womens field events, Nicole Keller and LeAnna Harris took first place in the discus and javelin events, respectively. Keller tossed a 87-- winner while Harris hit a 90-Franklin and Theresa Cook finished right behind their teammates. 1 six hits in seven frames. Kernan paced the Buffs eight hit attack with two doubles while both Emery, clubbing two doubles, and Merino, recorded two singles, sparked Tooele in coming off the bench. Ogden looked like they would come out smoking as they touched Buff starter Kowalski for two runs in the opening frame to take a quick 0 lead. Bret Nordquist led off the game with a triple and scored when Buff third sacker Gary Kimmels throw missed its mark at the plate. Andy Richardson, on first with the error, scored when Tiger catcher 2-- Eugene Nabor drilled a double, scoring Richardson from first. The Tigers gave Stringham a scare when after two were out, Mark Heslop singled to center and moved to third when Nabor Utah Adrian Dantley muscled up 34 points In Tuesdays victory over the L.A. Clippers at the Salt Palace.
