Marsh is one of those athletes that goes about his busi- ness of collecting points for Tooele. without tating the rave headlines. A steady and capable performer. Marsh usually competes in the longer events, concentrating on the 200 and freestyle events. Maish is greatly improved this year, and will no doubt finish much higher. In fact he is a good bet to win the 200 He will forego the 100 free and move into the 400 for his other event, and he should also finish high among the leaders at State. At the present, with medals only one to our credit, plus another silver and one bronze' medal, we look less like the leader of the world and more like just another competitor. However, in the long view of the pictuie, we see the many countries that do not have any kind of representation in the top three positions. In comparison to the many, we look pretty good. So far, the Winter Olympics have been dominated bv Russia, France, England and Germany along with Austria. The United States is one of these powers when you consider how many countries are b-f- ore - entered. One of the biggest thrills for this corner came when the team from Manchuria was introduced in opening day ceremonies. Never before entered, the Manchurians approached the Olympic committee and asked permission to enter a team. To say the least the committee was surprised. They held a hurried conference and came to the conclusion that there was no reason why Manchuria should not be entered. To our way of thinking, there was every reason why they should. This is, after all, a competition of the worlds nations and it brought the tears of pride to our eyes when the Manchurians proudly marched down the steps into the great amphitheater in opening ceremonies. It is through this means that true peace may be brought to the world . . . cooperation, friendly, competitive, among the members of each team reptop-lev- el resented. No, the Manchurians have not won any medals at all. But in a study of history you find much about this proud nation. The world is not made up of major powers like Russia and the United States and Great Britain. It is primarily composed of smaller nations like Manchuria. And it behooves us as a major power to recognize their place alongside us. It is our individuals who will bring about the close harmony between nations. When some of our people return, they will be wearing emblems from other countries, traded for a comparable emblem from the United States. Some even jrade their caps, and jackets, and these are but outward symbols or a wondeiful friendship traded between the two. Theres more fun, more heartbreak, more friendship found in such as the Olympics, its a wonder some of our athletes arent voted into leading offices of their countries. Dont ask me! Im just as confused as you about the sudden slump of the Brigham Young basketball team. In early season play the Cougars were rolling veiy well on the road. In recent weeks, they have suddenly gone cold at the basket, losing to Denver at Denver, and Utah State, both at home and away. The three consecutive losses is the longest loss streak of the season, but happily for Stan Watts and countless fans, the Cougars broke that with a return win over Denver University. BYU has a couple of weaknesses that Coach Watts is painfully aware of. The team also has some great strengths which have not been fully realized yet in the youth and inexperience of the team. Either side can break out on a given night to cause despair or joy. let down right Many teams have this about semester exam time. A combination of examinations, worry about getting good grades, playing i couple of tough opponents, etc., can take the edge ott a team. But now, its for them to come back. The Cougars meet the Utes, one of the surprise teams of the season this week.
