Mr. SEEING WITH DEAN Sports of Utah' Anybody want to second the nomination Ray Nagel for Coach of the Year honors? We're willing to make the nomination right now on Ihe basis of Utah's record to dale, and m the face of the fact that the Utes now face four extremely tough fooiball games, Arizona Stale, Army. California and Utah Slate. Only California will be on ihe L'te home field. N SATURDAYS of the old Cowboy-Indiascript was the best yet. The weather was perfect, the color of homecoming was infectious, the teams were keyed to an almost fever pitch. One Just couldnt believe the line play in that First hclf the conference race could turn into a Conceivably, tie. Wyoming could lose to Arizona or Arizona State and the Utes could win theirs with ASU. But because Wyoming is the only team to play five games, the maximum available, and the other teams play only four. Wyoming has the edge on percentages should each team. Wyoming, Utah and Arizona only lose one game. Any way you look at it, it could be more thrilling than last year's game, THE TRIALS AND, tribulations that come when you try to change offenses in tbe middle of a season have it all over changing horses in mid- - stream. Just ask coach Hal Mitchell. Mitchell saw in his first game that the personnel on this year's BYU team wouldn't be able to make the single wing go as it did last season under Eldon Fortie. He began planning the "Y formation wherein the fullback moves up immediately in a blocking back situation. It unbehind the veiled it against Wyoming and it worked fine . . . occasionally. What was missing was a solid defense to go with it and the Cowpokes routed the Cougars handily. Coach Tony Knap of Utah State must be wondering what Mitchell has done with the offense in the two weeks he has had to prepare for the Aggies. Frankly, so have most of the fans. THERE PROBABLY WONT be the same kind of surprise for Homecoming fans at Provo this week as the Cougars gave them last year in drubbing New Mexico The Aggies just look too tough. But then, again, you never know. Speaking of Eldon Fortie. he and his wife were blessed with the arrival of a new baby just a week or so ago. The Forties are living in Edmonton, Alberta Canada where Eldon still hopes to come back as a quarterback for the Eskimos. He has been put on waivers by the club as a halfback, but requested a chance to try it as a quarterback. He is still under contract with Edmonton at least until the end of the year. But he wont play unless he proves his quarterbacking ability and recovers from a couple of injuries that shelved him early in the season. ARIZONA STATE IS again tabbed as the team to beat in the Western Athletic Conference basketball race this season. In the annual meeting of the coaches, nearly all fingers were pointed at Ned Wulk to repeat last year's performance, though with probably a little more trouble. New Mexico and BYU were also tabbed as possibilities. New Mexico primarily on the basis of Ira Large Harge, and BYU on the basis of Coach Stan Watts coaching ability. Utah, Wyoming and Arizona were only given outside chances to crack the top three, but most coaches predicted another RE-RU- near-three-w- 27-- or sedan.
