Show I t Club Members i. Place Eye On f i Show Turkey and FFA and i r t boys girls who received 25 points each last spring in the Utah Junior Turkey Program are now carefully eyeing their birds. They are trying to determine which of their turkeys will win greatest favor with the show judge, J. David Carson of Utah State University. According to County Agent E. O. Biggs, three boys and girls from Tooele County have and FFA turkey projects this year in connection with the Junior Turkey Program sponsored by Utah Turkey Federation and USU Extension Services. They are Jerry Clark, Robert Tracy and Shirley Ann Pitt. THEIR TARGET DATE was Nov. 30. That is when they will choose their two best hens and two best toms and enter them at the Intermountain Farmers Association plant in Salt Lake City. The turkeys will be judged there starting, at 9 a m.. Dec. 1. "The competition will actually be a test of the junior growers ability to use good management practices in raising turkeys and to exercise skill in selecting and grooming birds for the show, USU Extension Poultryman C. Elmer Clark explained. He noted that the birds will be judged on the basis of 25 possible points for fleshing, includwith a ing general covering smooth coat of fat; 50 points for conformation, including depth of body, width of breast, length of keel, width of back and shoulders and moderately short legs; and 25 points for market appearance in dressing, including cleanliness of body bloom, free of abrasions and bruises and freedom from pinfeathers. THE TOP two turkeys in each of ten weight classes (five toms and five hens) will be auctioned Dec. 1 in connection with the Utah Turkey Federation 15th Annual Convention. At the convention banquet that evening, first to fifth place prizes for each class will be awarded to the boys and girls producing the winning birds. As an incentive all junior turkey growers who enter the show will receive a premium of five cents a pound for all contest birds not sold at the auction, Clark said. 4-- !. . - COUNSELORS Eugene Morrell, student coordinator and Robert E. Hunger rather than a surplus of food would very quickly become our constant worry and tragedy. Pesticides are literally Pesticides Save Millions Dont let sensational writers worry you about chemical pesticides endangering your health, says County Agent E. 0. Biggs. Entomologists at Utah State University say they have no authentic record of even one case where death or serious illness, resulted from treated food crops when residues were kept in line with federal tolerances and regulations. ON THE OTHER hand, they point out that were it not for the benefits we derive from the various agricultural chemicals, including pesticide, we in the United States would soon sink to a very low level of living. Our food supply would be meager and contaminated and could not be preserved long without heavy loss. There would be much de saving millions of lives throughout the world, both from reduced incidence of disease and in lessening starvation. Entomologists point out that the public, does have protection. Research on all pest control chemicals before they are released must show that they can be used safely, as far as man and livestock are concerned and with but limited disadvantage to wildlife. THEY MUST MEET conditions as well as give effective pest control before the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration permits them to be sold commercially for use. Thanks much to scientific advances in the use of agriculture chemicals, we in America now WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS enjoy the highest standard of Motorists, watch for pedestliving in the world with the cleanest and most wholesome rians who may not watch out for you!
