Show Water Needs Demand Greater Moisture Savings Electricity Some Wheal Acreage Quotas Exempt In 63 - evaporate annually from reservoirs and lakes in the 17 western states. An acre foot of water is an acre of water one foot deep. Evaporation from the surfacd of Lake Mead alone would cover all of Washington D.C. with 25.6 feet of water. It is equivalent to enough water to supply three million people, a city approximately the size of Chicago, with all their fresh water culinary needs for one year. ONE ACRE FOOT of water saved will supply an average size family for one year. Seriousness of evaporation can be illustrated by data on Utah Utah in Lake Utah County. Lake with its area of 90.000 acres has an evaporation loss each summer in excess of four feet of surface water, or 360.000 acre feet. According to Dr. Vaughn Han-sen, engineering experiment station director, USU, it has been known for more than 25 years that certain chemicals spread on water surfaces will form a film one molecule thick and will reduce evaporation. ONE OF THE MAJOR problems has been obtaining satisfactory equipment to spread the material. One of the materials. can be handled Hexadecanol, as a powder or a molten liquid. It is white and smells like paraffin wax. It is abolsutely harmless to animals, humans, fish, boats, etc. Last year experimental work was done to handle Hexadecanol in a molten form. In utilizing this method, two types of heating equipment are essential. They consist of equipment to keep the material hot as long as it is in the plane, and the equipment on the ground to initially heat the material. TESTS WERE MADE over three different bodies of water: the first on the Salmon Creek Reservoir in Idaho; the second at Utah Lake near Provo; and the third at Bear Lake. According to Earl Israelson, Research who is Engineer, working with Dr. Hansen on the project, these tests proved aerial application of Hexadecanol to be definitely practical. Cost of the application was not the objective of the 1961 research. Nevertheless the experience gained shows that cost per acre foot of water saved was very promising. DURING THE SUMMER of 1962, to further prove the feasibility of application and economics, new equipment was installed to spray the Hexadecanol in powder form We are very, very pleased with the results of our experiment so far, Mr. Israelsen said. "With change and modification we have determined the feasibility of this equipment in spraying large bodies of water. Warr, Chairman, and Stabilization County Committee. It does not change quota farms provisions relating to wheat in 1963. Under a marketing quota exprogram, the Chairman plained, farmers who do not comply with their wheat acreage allotments are subject to on marketing quota penalties their excess wheat. The new provision, however, like that in effect at the time of the referendum last August, permits a farmer to plant up to 15 acres 1963 of wheat for harvest in without marketing quota penalties being applied. Mr. Warr emphasized that this new provision relates only to wheat marketing quotas for 1963, and differs from the acreage provisions for participation n in the 1963 voluntary pro(stabilization) gram.
