People who plan on planting trees this year on their farms, ranch woodlands, and forest lands, should order their trees now. According to Bill Poulsen, District Forester, Utah Forestry Depart-ment. The State tree nursery at Logan plans to start shipping! trees about April 1. There will be! over 200,000 seedlings available) this spring. Poulsen indicates that trees can be planted as soon as the frost is out of the ground. Those planted early in the spring will have a longer growing period in which tOj become established. The first year most of the seedlings energy will! be used to establish the root; system and little top growth will be noted. An established root system is essential for vigorous growth in the following years. The seedlings are sold to farmers and ranchers in Utah at a nominal cost. The seedlings are to be used for windbreaks, shel- terbelts, post lots, wood lots, wildlife habitat, and Christmas tree planting on farms and ranches, A farm or ranch is defined as a piece of land two acres or morel in size. The law prohibits use of' seedlings for ornamental or decorative purposes. Nor can the seedlings be resold as living trees. The popularity of Christmas tree planting is increasing in Utah as the demand for Christmas trees becomes stronger. The majority of the plantings have been made on irrigated land, and it is estimated that it will take ten years before the trees will be ready to harvest. In the past, Blue Spruce and Douglas Fir have been the most popular trees to plant for Christmas trees, but now Ponde-ros- a Pine is becoming more popular as a Christmas tree. Also, Ponderosa Pine will reach Christmas tree size 2 to 3 years sooner than the Blue Spruce. Seedling application forms can be obtained from the County Agents.
