Last year he played a contest solo and despite the fact that it was his first year on the instru HATE! ment, played the difficult Scene and Air and received a silver medal. Control of the upper re gister of an alto clarinet is illusive and unmstructable. It is not possible to tell a per son how to feel his way over the upper register. The individual must experiment with air and lip pressure and balance it properly according to the reed and mouththe piece structure to produce rather melancholy tone quality that is characteristic of the instrument. Any variation from the straight and narrow balance of pressures and breath results in a most distressing squeak that the oil can cannot help. IT TAKES something of a sensitive scientist to understand the instrument and play it. Its tone and expressiveness are well worth the trouble and talent needed to perforin on it, however. In school, Ronnie has discover-ea liking for dramatics. He was in three plays this year and is a member of the Thespians. His classes this year have been, English, chemistry, band, phys. ed., debate, and American history. He is an excellent student and a deep formation and his witty sayings make him interesting, intellechas tually.
