It is called "white top from the color of its flower. An other name it goes by is "Hoary Cress. Home on Leave top spreads from seeds stocks. and underground root Normal plowing and cultivation does little to kill or control the weed. It gets in fields, crowding out desirable crop plants, stealing water and fertility and greatly reducing yields. limited It has palability stock not eating it if any other feed is available. It seems to be most desired by stock after the seed has matured. Many of these seeds pass through the animals digestive tract without damage and are scattered wherever ani mals travel. Notice the patches on the hills above Tod and Stockton. Animals caused these infestations. It grows well along irrigation ditches and the seed is carried out on the fields. .White top being a noxious weed is not an easy weed to kill. However, with new chemicals and a regular persistant program, these weeds can be controlled. For many years Tooele county commissioners have had a program of spraying county roads with 24D. If you will observe, this weed has been almost eliminated from our county roads. Newer chemicals are said to do even a better job California. The sugar found in the sugar beet is the same sugar found in many other plants, such as sugar cane and the maple tree. Chemists call this sugar "sucrose and tell us it is manufactured in the plant through a process called photosynthesis. The plant combines hydrogen and oxygen from water with carbon from the carbon dioxide in the air to manufacture pure sucrose. The sun supplies the energy for this manufacturing process.
