Wildlife, like human beings : require adequate food, water and ' shelter to survive. Much of their I winter behavior, including, mi grations and daily movement are instinctive, or learned behaviors, ; associated with the need to sat , isfy survival requirements. ; Birds must eat large quantities of high energy foods often and rapidly. Research shows that g some birds can survive up to 67 hours without food in the summer but only 15 hours the length of a night- - in the winter. Tb survive the winter, small birds must find feed daily during wintertime daylight hours. The quickest way to begin a winter feeding bird program is to buy seed and throw it on the ground. However, to attract the greatest variety of birds while minimizing the effect of severe weather and cat predation, con- -' sider using an assortment of elevated feeders placed in strategic backyard locations. Birds generally prefer feeding on one of the four levels. Mourning doves, most sparrows and juncos are ground feeders. Cardinals, finches, jays and some sparrows will visit table level feeders. Chickadees ahd gold finches will ding to hanging feeders. Suet eaters like woodpeckers, nuthatches and brown creepers prefer to use tree trunks : gram anytime, but once you do, try to maintain it until early spring. Dont pull the rug out from under a local population of birds dependent on your feeder for winter survival. CHRISTMAS PLANTS AMARYLLIS is a beautiful plant that many people receive or give as gifts at Christmas time. The pots should be large seed-eatin- enough to allow one inch of soil between the bulb and the rim. The potting mix should be very light, well drained and only cov-e- r about half the bulb. ; Add only enough water to moisten the soil thoroughly. Do not keep the soil soaked and do not water from below. Warmth is an important influence in promoting blooms. After the plant blooms, keep the plant at 65 to 68 degrees to lengthen the life of the blossoms. After the blooms are gone, place the plant in a light place indoors until all danger of frost is past. They may then be put outdoors. In the fall bring them into a garage where they will not freeze. The leaves will yellow and the bulb will go into its resting period. Store at 0 degrees where it is dry and dark. Do not water. You may bring them into the house in December and start the cycle over again. come in many POINSETOA beautiful varieties and colors now. They are easy to grow, but need to be kept warm and in as light a place as possible. Keep your plants away from furnace vents and outside doors where temperature changes may harm them. They need to be watered consistently, but must be well drained. You may fertilize them every two weeks. In this way you - 45-5- - while feeding. Some of these birds will feed at more than one level. It is ideal to have foods available at various levels to attract the most variety. In choosing or building feeders almost any invention will work. feeder can be made with a simple wooden platform base mounted on a post, patio railing or even modified to fit a window sill. Hanging feeders can be made out of hollowed coconut shells, plastic mailing tubes and even large cans. Trunk feeders to distribute suet can be fashioned out of predrilled logs, hardware cloth or even pine cones that are filled with a melted suet and then allowed to harden. ' Research shows that two common seeds, the black sunflower and white proso millet are most attractive to the greatest variety of birds. Select feeding covers near cover. Adjacent trees and shrubs provide important escape cover to avoid predators and adverse weather. Take precautions to avoid a possible aspergillosis outbreak.
