The first twelve verses of Mark chapter 2 shows Jesus be- ing criticized for forgiving the sins of a crippled man who was let down through the ceiling. Jesus is criticized in w. 7 for associating with sinners. In w. Jesus and His disciples are criticized for not fasting, and in our text He is criticized for working on the Sabbath. Every time He turned around, the Lord was being condemned by the religious majority. In reality it was Jesus who was living righteously according to the laws of God, and the religious majority were the ones who had corrupted what God had given. Verse 23 says that the disciples began to pluck the ears of corn or grain, and in a parallel passage in Luke 6:1, we see that they ...did eat, rubbing them in their hands. According to the Jewish religious leaders, plucking was technically reaping, and rubbing them in their hands was grinding, thus both constituted work which was forbidden by the Law on the Sabbath. JESUS STANDS FIRM ON GODS WORD. Jesus shows them with the Word of God that human needs take precedent over ceremonial law. Jesus related the story of David in 1 Sam. 21:1-6- . He rebukes them with the phrase, Have you never read.. which gets their attention. The word read means to distinguish between, recognize, know accurately. In an emergency, David was allowed to eat the holy bread that was only to be eaten by the priests. The priests ate the bread on the Sabbath and set out new bread. In chapter 3:1-Jesus reinforces this concept. The Lord showed the leaders that the problem was their view of the Sabbath. Jesus references Gen. 2:2-- where God rested. The word rested translates to Sabbath. Neither Jesus nor the Pharisees believed God needed rest but simply ceased from creating. God didnt need the rest but His creation would, so He blessed it and hollowed it for them. When we look at Exo. 20:8-1- 1 and Deu. 5: we see that the Sabbath or rest was for those who work hard during the week. Jesus point here is that the Sabbath was meant to be a blessing for mankind to meet a need that their creator knew they would have. We were not to be a slave to it, it was for us. JESUS IS LORD OVER THE SABBATH. Jesus identifies Himself with man in that the Sabbath was meant for man and He is mans representative before God. In verse 27, Mark used the term man but in verse 28, he used the term Son of man. This differentiation shows that Jesus was more that just a man. This phrase identifies Jesus as God. Son of man means the MessiahGod in the flesh. The word therefore means so that or consequently. The Bible is saying that Jesus is Lord; He is God in the flesh and consequently has authority over that which He created and sanctified for mankind. The Pharisees completely understood this truth because after this claim and the subsequent healing in chapter 3, the Pharisees begin to form a strategy to destroy Jesus. Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath because it was He who created it for man. Jesus is God in the flesh. When we put all of our faith in Him and receive Him as our Saviour, the Bible says we become the sons of God and are given everlasting life. I would encourage you to receive Him today and be born again into the family of God! 3 12-1- Sas TDue Peirifecli A YIM nfftt oalbsciriiipftfoira Ds ns CwDStaas offt Just One Stop And You Can Gift The Gift That Give All Year! Miraculously, that oil burned for eight days and nights, giving them enough time to prepare fresh consecrated oil. To honor this miracle of light, as well as the triumph of weak over strong, Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. Each night, the family gathers around the menorah, a candelabrum used during the celebration. On the first night, one candle is lit; on the second night, two candles are lit, and so on, until all candles are lit on the eighth night. The family celebrates together, and gifts are given each night. Beginning Dec. 26 and lasting for seven days, celebrate Kwanzaa to reflect upon their rich heritage.
