These authors have many of my dollars in their dation of love and security and confidence. Imagine what we teachers will be able to build on that. pockets. I remember being impressed with one book on how to teach your child to read before age 2. (It should have been entitled, Making Your Child Neurotic Before He Can Walk.) Ive always felt pretty good about my teaching abilities. Im pretty confident about how to drill times tables. My school kids always enjoyed social studies. Even math can seem like a game if you do it right. Im on shakier ground as a parent. So shaky, in fact, that some of my parenting moments have registered on the Richter scale. And Ive read every parenting book in print, hoping to find the magic formula. Let me save you a few dollars and sum up the stuff that actually made sense: One, play with your kids. Have fun. Tickle. Build a snowman. Race. Play skeeball. Dont get so uptight about being the authority figure that you cant share your real self with your children. Two, tell them that you love them. Say it when you wake them up. Say it when you send them off to school. Say it when you talk to them on the phone. Say it when you scold them. Let it be the last thing they hear before they go to sleep. Make it be--, come a natural part of them like eating or breathing or fighting with siblings. Three, learn to walk the tightrope. Find the balance between being there when they need you and knowing when to let go whether they stand or fall. All the books Ive read tell you to do this. None tell you how. No teacher, no matter how eli- gible to attend.
