They are not dead, as some people fear. Next year, the trees thus affected by summer leaf scorch will come out looking perfectly normal, says Sherman V. Thomson, Extension plant pathologist at Utah State University. To prevent the condition from next summer, he recommends pruning. Particularly, cut back the top of the affected trees so they dont have so much foliage to take care of. Thomson explained that summer leaf scorch not uncommon on shade trees such as the horse chestnuts, lindens, sycamores, and others. It results from the inability of thp tree to is translocate water fast enough to keep the leaves in good condition during hot, dry weather, especially when the wind is blowing. The leaves start to wither showing symptoms of drought. They turn brown two to three weeks later, and the tree becomes ist said that there isnt much that can be done at the time to stop the leaf scorch. Providing deep weather does help some, but the tree may be affected even when its roots have access to plenty of water. Pruning to reduce the leaf area will help safeguard the tree for another season.
