Check vehicle expiration date to avoid double taxes Persons whose vehicle registration expires in December but who wait until January to renew their registration had better watch out, County Assesor Tom Fowkes, or theyll be paying a double tax assessment. This is due, Fowkes says, to the fact that even though a registration may expire in December, the registrant is actually paying taxes for the calendar year 1980. In essence, the registrant has had the benefit of a delayed payment. says For those who purchased a vehicle in December of 1979 (through the staggered registration program), the taxes are not paid until December of 1980. However if taxes are not paid at that time and are paid in January, the two years taxes are due one tax for l as 1980 and one for 1981 will new become the January registration date. To avoid confusion, the Utah State Tax Commission suggests that registrations due in December be renewed at that time.
