Naturally we are very much concerned about the health of our school children. We would like to see every boy and girl grow into perfect manhood and womanhood, and enjoy perfect ' health. When our local Health Council discovered the alarming condition of our children we immediately wrote to Doctor Wm. M. McKay, M. D. Collaborating Epidemiologist of the U. S. Public Health Servipe, to see what could be done about it; also what was being done in other parts of the state. The letter which follows was I)r. McKays answer to us. We urge that every family in the county will carefully read this message of Dr. McKay and then follow his advice. We feel that it is much, cheaper to follow his instruction in preventive measures than it would be to buy goitre tablets or! pay for operations and hospitalization. If there are any doubts in your mind, or if you wish more advice on this problem, we advise you to! consult your family physician. Elveda Walton, R. N. Public Health Nurse Dear Miss Walton: In checking over the report of thd goitre survey made in I92f, I notice that the incidence of goit- -' re in the school population in your county was 53.5. I surmize that your soil and water has not improved any in iodine content since that time so that your concern for the youngsters of school age is warranted. At that time, I understand goitre tablets were furnished either by the State or the Boards of Education. Since then, however, iodized salt has been put on the market and among public health authorities at present it is generally believed that special iodine tablets are not necessary if the iodized salt is used regularly in cooking and seasoning foods. The question of cost of this salt over the plain salt is so small that every nANNUAL family in our goitre counties should 3 STAR SPECIAL! use it. If your physicians feel that it would be better to administer iodDRAPES SUP COVERS ine tablets to the youngsters , we would suggest a preparation conUPHOLSTERING taining 6 of a grain which could D. - T. - R.
