John Nichols, 24 years old, of 622 Oxford street, and Thomas Jefferies were at work together when the scaf fold collapsed. Nichols was struck by a falling plank and was precipitated to the pavement, but Jefferies with rare .presence of mind, grasped a telegraph wire which runs along the side of the building and called for kelp. Two workmen, whose names could not be learned, climbed to the roof of the building. One lowered the other by the feet to the point where Jefferies was hanging. Jefferies was then lifted on the roof. The terrible suspense he had endured caused him to fall In a heap at the feet of his rescuers, but he was soon revived. In the meantime firemen from engine company No. 22 had taken Nichols from the debris and sent him to the Pennsylvania hospital. W suf fered from contusions of the h of, arm, hips and ankle.
