There are several varieties of wild turkey, each with specific habitat preferences. The Rio Grande turkey is most commonly found at lower elevation along bottomlands adjacent to open areas. These turkeys utilize tall cottonwood trees for roosting. The turkey is a shy and elusive bird. It has extraordinarily keen hearing and eyesight accompanied with an ability to move very quietly through all types of habitat. The strong, swift footing of the turkey allows it to move rapidly on the ground at speeds up to 30 miles an hour. The normal flight of a turkey is rapid and generally not maintained for long distances. Bucks lose to Pirates 61-4- 5 by Bruce Adams Thursday night the MHS Bucks hosted the league leading Green River Pirates and lost 6145. The Bucks had hoped to upset the Pirates on the Bucks home court but were shaken by the loss of point guard Kraig Black. Black, who suffered a knee injury in a game in Ignatio, Colorado, missed the Green River game and the San Juan game. Blacks injury is not considered serious enough to end his season of play, but it came at a critical time for the Bucks. Green River came to off a late season loss to Tabiona. The Bucks had lost earlier to Tabiona and needed a victory over the Pirates to gain a share of the league championship pie. However, the Pirates were determined not to get into a loosing mode. The game was not a game by either team but rather a game of who played worse. The turkeys were supplied through an exchange with the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department. The transplant was the result of a cooperative agreement between The Division of Wildlife Resources and the Bureau of Land Management. The birds, consisting of both Member F.D.I.C. toms and hens, were released on BLM land and will increase hunting opportunities and add diversity for Utah sportsmen. The birds were marked with leg bands for future records and several birds were equipped with radio transmitters.
