Show Tips from the Hat Getting a year older has its compensations. Thursday night my fellow teachers dropped in on me en masse Paul, Helen and Ronnie Rosier, Anna Pehr-soBonnie Brown, Bob and Sharon Turner and their three little ones, and our neighbor Myrtle Davis. Myrtle baked my birthday cake and Maude Hunt did a superb job at decorating it it was almost too pretty to eat but we overcame that and finished it off in a hurry. Myrtle apologized for the cake said it wasn't very good. All that I can say is her "failures" surpass my successes. The children at Mexican Hat Elementary are always happy to see the Bookmobile drive up, but this week they were doubly so, because Bozo the Book Clown was driving it. Bozo visited the classrooms and told an old folk tale to the children. Bozo also told them about a reading incentive plan. Anyone who reads 50 books and turns in the titles and authors will receive a "I 'm a Bookworm" badge. James Creen-aulg- h, speaking for Bozo, said that he had never checked out so many books at one time before. Friday, April 10, all the children under 12, who had written permission from their parents went to Monument Valley Clinic for Rubella shots. If we have a future Astronaut n, Camper Trailer Rancho El Rey amongst these children they won't miss their chance to go to the moon. Joyce Pehrson was admitted to the Primary Children's Hospital April 12 and underwent surgery on her legs April 13. She is a brave little girl and we all wish her the best. James Hunt and his sons, getting ready for summer fun, took their refurnished boat to Hall's Crossing where they launched it. They took a trip to the confluence of the Colo, and the San Juan and up the San Juan River past Trail Canyon. Floyd and Fern Newport went to Cortez on business Mond ay night. We took a weekend trip to Grand Junction where we rendezvoused with our son Bill and his family. Grand Junction is just half way between Denver and Mexican Hat and is an easy ride for both of us, and lets us see our 2 12 year old grandson and his month old sister more often. Coming back we took highway 141 to Uravan and a dirt road from there to Bedrock. Riding along the Dolores River as it snakes its way through the mountains is a trip well worth the extra hour it takes over the more direct route via Crescent Junction. An interest Jing bit of history can be seen along this route a hanging flume built back in the 1890's is in fair condition in several spots. The wooden flume was hung on wooden stakes hammered into the solid rock walls when the area was hit with gold fever. After spending $173,000.00 the project was abandoned in the panic of 1893. Luther Riesenhoover told us what a pretty trip it was; he used to drive ore trucks through the area. President L.
