At a quarter of 10 yesterday evening a terrible explosion occurred on board the United States cruiser Maine in Havana harbor. Many were killed or wounded. The wounded sailo-- s of the Maine are unable to explain it. It is believed that the cruiser is totally destroyed. The explosion shook the whole city. The windows were broken in all the houses. The correspondent of the Associated Press says he has conversed with several of the wounded sailors and understands from them that the explosion took place while they were asleep, so that they can give no particulars as to the cause. The wildest excitement prevails in Havana. The wharves are crowded with thousands of people. It is believed the explosion occurred in a small powder magazine. At a quarter of 11 o'clock what remains of the Maine is still burning. Captain Sigsbee and the other officers have been saved. It is estimated that over a hundred of the crew were killed, but it is impossible yet to give exact details. Admiral Mantereta has ordered that boats of all kinds should go to the assistance of the Maine and her wounded. The Ilavanacfiremen are giving aid, tending carefully to the wounded as they are brought on shore. General Zolano and the othei generals have been ordered by Captain General Blanco to take steps to help the Maine's crew in every possible way. The correspondent of the Associated Press has been near the Maine in a boat of the cruiser Alfonso XIII, and seen others of the wounded who corroborated the statement of those first interviewed, that they were already asleep when the explosion occurred. Captain Sigsbee says the explosion occurred in the bow of the vessel. He received a wound in the head. Orders were given to the other officers to save themselves as best they could. The latter, who were literally thrown from their bunks in their night clothing gave the necessary orders with reat and bravery. The first theory was that there had been a preliminary explosion in the Santa Barbara (magazine) of powder or dynamite below the water. Admiral Mantereta believes that the first explosion was of a grenade that was hurled over the navy yard. The report that Captain Sigsbee was wounded was inaccurate. Captain Sigsbee, with other officers, went in a small boat to the Ward Line steamer City of Washington. Two officers and more than 200 of the crew are missing. Some of the crew who were able to support themselves by swimming were saved by the boats. Six of the wounded crew and one of the officers have been taken to the military hospital by General Blanco's Bot- . n man-of-w- ar t. Will CO. Wrote Insultingly of President McKinley and Kesignetl. Washington, Jan. 14. There are no late developments in the DeLorne case, and his successor has not yet been named. A note from Minister Woodford concerning some manifestations that the minister's conduct is not approved by the Spanish government is demanded, but there is no thought as to the manner in which the offending minister shall go by resignation or summary recall. The important feature is that he shall no longer represent the Spanish government. The offense with which DeLome is charged, and which he refuses to deny, is in a letter written to a friend in Cuba in which he said Mclow was a caand Kinley politician tered to the worst elements in American politics, receiving his ideas from jingoes. In some manner the letter fell into the hands of the Cuban leaders in New York and was given to the press. The letter was written ten days ago and was first published last Friday. Its genuineness was doubted at first in official circles, or at least thought some mistake had been made in translation. DeLome, however, admitted its authorship virtually by sending his resignation by cable to the government at Madrid. The incident has been of no particular benefit to the cause of Spain in official circles, and has been the cause of an awakening of the friends of Cuba in congress. Fusion Advocated In Oregon. Portland, Ore., Feb. 14. The Democratic state central committee has issued an address to the people of Oregon in which it set forth the advan- tages of fusion with the Ponulists and free silver Republicans at the coming election. The address says: We welcome the hope that these three organizations may make common cause against a common enemy, and we earnestly trust that some plan may be discovered upon which all three of them may unite in some manner, which is alike fair and honorable to each and all of them, so that without any sacrifice of principles the common people may present a united and unbroken front in favor of government by the people.
