In a speech by Mr. Geo. Fennernore, at their Mass Meeting, that gentleman rightly said; premises as well as the business men This seems like going at the matter m a right way. Now let us look at our own p sition. Here is Fan Pete county, a countv of unbounded resourses, many of which aie undeveloped and without any means of communicating directly between our principal towns, or from auyLff them to the outside woild. Suppose that a railroad was to he built from Thistle through Kairview, Alt, Pleasant, Spring City, Ephiaim. Manti and Gunnison, or through Fountain Green, Moroni Mt. Pleasant Spiing City, Ephraim, Manti and Gunnison, the ix or seven tow ns of considerable im portance in this county would be brought into diiect communication with each other and the outside wo: Id; and there is no doubt blit piopeity along the line would be increased in value 50 to 100 per cent. Why could not the various city governments offer a bonus of from $1000 to the first road that would pass through ourcounty taking in the principal towns and why could not our county otiei $5000 to such an enterprie. These figures bethaps look big to many but ttiey aie not beyond the bounds ot teason, and could be done, Would such a move oe an injustice to any one and would the county and cities he out ol pocket by it? we argue not. The revenue fiont taxes 011 the railroad alone would soon reimburse them lor the entire outlay; besides the added value cl real estate. Now along this line aie front 15 to 18 merchantile firms ol considerable importance, who could give front $500 to $1000 each. Wou'd these firms loose anything by their liberal donsiion? No, they would not. business would increase sullicient to pay them back every business dollar; and, besides, their would be more of cash instead of credit and trade exchange and their returns more direct. There are also, peihaps, 15 1030 parties engaged in other blanches of business who could present from $100 to $500, and make it back with interest in a short time with their d business. Besides these, there are scores who could give from $1 to Sluo. Now suppose we, as a united whole could raise from $25,000 to 50,000 and say to someone of the railroad companies who are building through the Territory, or propose to extend their lares, here is this amount ot a bonus and we will give the right of way and depot giounds through and in our ciiies, if vou will build through those various towns; if you will not, we have plenty of idle teams and do not propose, and will not support an institution that will not do anvtmng for us. We will freight our merchandise and ship our productions to and from markets in the way. Sanpete has population and business sufficient to make even some ol those vast incorporations stop to think a moment, before saying no, Besides this there is no great obsticles to overcome.but a nice even grade most of the w'ay, and it is not asking them to go much out of their way to accommodate U3) hence there is nothing unreasonable in such a proposition and request. For such a bonus and with facts concerning our resources and business plainly plcaed before them, they will certainly give us the much desired prize, Sanpete is paying tribute to Juab county, or the strong being brought into subjugation to the Weak. In olden times, the weak pay homage to the great and strong and contributed to make (Decause they are them stronger; forced to) but in our case the afiair is reversed, the strong pay tribute to the weak and contribute to their wealth and comfort, because either they want too, or are two indifferent to do otherwise. Tltere is at least three towns in our oun county who have as great or neighborgreater opportunities than our ing town of Nephi; but yet we let them control our business. We ought to be ashamed of our lack of enterprise and not permit this thing to go much lurth-e- r. Notice h'tuteof h (June interesting to see tiie interest taken in the City of Heaver, t guards securing a railroad. Heaver realizes her position as does also I'arowan and some other of the southern towns, and if they IS iuterid PHYSICIAN NO. 12. WHAT WE WANT. Utah ML Fio.iMUit, UTAH, THURSDAY, JULY o , 1SS0. A I.
