I have known instances where good colonies were so reduced by fighting while rob bing that they in turn fell a prey to similar marauders. Yet I seldom lose a stock by robbing. I simply keep the entrance closed, leaving, during spring, a passage for the bees it work. It is true, I have lost a few, when the other bees took the honey, but they would haye been lost in any case. A great many apiarians leave their entrance wide open in spring. They seem to disregard the opportunity it gives robbers the full advantage to the entrance. It is like setting the door of your dwelling open, to tempt the thief, aad then complaining ol the consequence. Let it be understood, then, that all good stock, Under ordinary circumstances, will take cart of themselves. Nature hai provided ffieans of defence, with instifet to di feet its use. There Is a prevalent opinion that robbers often go to a neighboring lhfe, kill oft the bees first.tlnd then take posession of the spoil. I have never yet discovered one fact to corroborate thisj although I have watched very closely. Whenever, bees have lost all their stores at a period wHen nothing was to be obtained front flowers, it is evideht that they rdust Soon starve and dissapear in a few days. This would naturally give rise to the supposition that they had been! killed by the robbers. Joseph S. BRAiTHtfrAiTE. ' County bee Inspector, Manti March 5thj 1888.
