Jeffcr on, tnat a country can better afford to be without a government man without a nevvspapei. Our experience, while it has not altogether been an exception to the ru.e in incipient journalism has, nevertheless, been moderately grate tying. True, we have not literal ly lived like a hermit,' but wb have worked like a horse. well nigh At the commencement of our work, the .ie found times very depres-ed- , eoumry was wed supplied aimost urfei.ed with papers and periodic al- - of different kinds; we were led by many as adventurers lather than as friends to the people. S.ill, despite all this and many o her obstacles which might be mentioned our principles we sent to. tli and we began our work. We were willing to make the start even in the face of adversity, for we were coiwious that Lie work which we bad espoused was a good one; and we Hatter ourselves th it the country is better for our having been here. At times, our bnsine-- s and even the propriety of running a county paper have been iuipug-nby dis.itleJted, and otherwise affected persons. We have not dw.iys theaspersive sneeis and cynical darts of professional and critics; but with all of our vicissitudes we have borne steaduy onw.n'd, determined to lament oui selves and the country in which we live. A nuin er of our generous public sp.riti-men have come to our patronage and have Stood firmly at our side. We nave aimed to reciprocal by to foster the indnstr.es and draw attention to the resources of the country. Our business has also retained, and brought, by wav ot legal ad veitisement etc, considerable means into the countv that nouM otherwi-- e have been sent to other sections. e have also given a slight impetus to the art of piloting m our county by employing oung ladies and others in our of- peri-euce- n f 1 re-g- ar President Peterson has returned fion a preaching tour through Southern Utah. It. MATTERS. In an interview with a Sentinel reporter, recently, Hon. John Sharp stated pointedly that he thought local lajlroad matters in this county would soon lie given a new start, and assume a brighter outlook, as a proposition had already gone to the Union Pacific Company to furnish the S. P. V. road with smlicient iron (rails) to build fifteen miles of road, on the basis that the U. P. Co. take first class bonds on the S. P.V.roud.as payment. Whether this scheme is udd'-nly and vigorously carried out or not, the fact is plain that the railroad companies, no less than the inter ested citizens, can afford to lot this fertile section and l s i ich resources lie dormant ; and if Mr. Bambeiger and tue Utah Central Company do not tike vigorous steps to push the local road on soon, it will require but little argument to induce the I). A R. (. to build a branch line into this county, and thus facilitate our trade with both Eastern ar.d Western markets.
