Why, we dont need to take an active interest in the Wildlife Federation any more, we have the Fish and Game Department to do the job for us now. This statement is true enough up to a point. The department is doing all in its power to serve the Wildlife interests in he state: and I might add it is doing an outstanding job through out the state. It is serving the people well, but it can serve you better if it has an active Wildlife group to back it up. In fact we are facing many new problems which are going to require the cooperation of all interested individuals. I should like to cite one example. Wealthy interests from inside and outside the state are rapidly arganizing to promote private hunting and fishing clubs. What does this mean to Mr. Average Sportsman? it simply menas that sometime in the future and it may not be in the too distant future either, you may find yourself on the outside looking in when you take to the field unless you have an extra flush pocket book. Let me point out to you that is happening in a west coast state where private hunting clubs arein vogue. To obtain the priviledge to enjoy hunting and fishing as a club member one must become a member at the hefty sum of several thousand dollars id many cases. Some diffemce fro mthe two dollar fee required of you to be a member of the local Gun and Rod Club. Problems like these are going to need your attention. . mlZ The continual introduction of modern equipment has kept copper production a successful business in Utah. At Kennecotts Bingham Mine, for example, huge electric shovels handle enormous quantities of ore and waste rock efficiently something men with picks and hand shovels couldnt possibly do. In the same tradition, accounting machines are used by Kennecotts comptrollers department. This machine accounting system supplies management with information vital to operations more promptly and accurately than could have been achieved by yesterdays methods. Working with enormous numbers of facts and figures, machine accounting is fast, efficient and thorough. For example, it calculates pay rate, hours worked and any of 200 payroll deductions to produce 1,000 pay checks an hour. It keeps an inventory of 46,000 supply items and makes information on them available at a moments notice. It provides needed metallurup-to-da- v. W msai Division te gical data in less than a tenth of the time it would have taken before machines came on the job. Even now, plans are under way to achieve tomorrow what is impossible today. The machine accounting system will be expanded to be a more valuable aid to management in the future. This is another step by Kennecott to help assure continued copper production by improving operations. Ebnnecoit PROUD TO BE PART OF A p oration GROWING UTAH The Parowan Gun and Rod club is affiliated with the Southern Utah Wildlife Federation as well as the state and national organizations. These groups represent you on local, state and national levels to promote good practices in Wildlife. Much of the outstanding legislation for the development and protection of our Wildlife rescources come about as a result of the Wildlife Federations carrying the ball. The outstanding strides the Fish and Game Department has made in recent years have come about in no small degree through the willing support it has relubs throughout the state. The ceived from the Wildlife Parowan Gun and Rod club has been representing not only its member, but all of us who enjoy hunting and fishing. I think it is about time we stopped riding and did a little pushing. It has been brought to my attention that we have citizens who feel the club has not entirely held to standards that some feel they should maintain. It has been my .experience as a member of the club to find their standards to be very high as an organization. True, some individuals let down the bars, but we find that situation in all organizations. In fact the club has even discontinued Sunday rabbit hunts in think is very an effort to raise their standards. This could commendable. If some of you feel the club improve betterfor tallents its offer and good not you join why its better than no is the all ment. After organization memberships. Perhaps many of you are uninformed as to what the Gam and Rod activities are. I should like to mention just a few; p&riodc rabbit hunts, (held Saturday), Turkey Shoots, a nnanual Deer Hunters Ball is put on, sponsors an annual Conservation Contest in the High School during Wikilife Week, a club house has been purchased and is in the process of being remodeled, they have presently under taken a project to pipe drinking water to the camp sites at Yankee Meadow Reservoir (this project should be and they are active supportcompleted by ers of the community and render service in all community projects. mid-summe- r) Mark on your calendar Thursday, April 7, 1960 as the drive for memberdate for the beginning of an all-okicked-ofa pot luck supper be This drive with f will ships. to be held at the club house.
