One of the first things that comes to mind, is a network of good roads connecting the scenic attractions that abound in this section, but many of which are unavailable to the traveling public because of lack of roads. We need the attractions by themselves, developed to a point where touris's can be accomodated and be able to enjoy them in reasonable comfort. We need good cafes and auto courts in each town services, and places for people to shop, and that they have an an intensive advertising and promotion campaign to let people outside of the state know what we have to offer. Part of these aims are being worked toward now under the guidance of the Iron County Commissioners, commissioners from Washington, Kane, Garfield, and Beaver counties, and civic groups from the cities and counties concerned. Though these organizations have taken a decided step the right direction, it still leaves a gap in the program that can only be filled by local businesses in each town. They must show that they have something to offer in the way of accomodations, including motels, restaurants, information where the touring public can be taken care of. And sve need interest in trying to entice the traveling public to remain in their area an extra day. in The folowing figures, gathered by W. Clair Rowiey, from the American Automobile Association, and from the Utah State Road Commission and the Salt Lake Chamber of Com merce surveys, tell quite a story as far as Utah and its tourist business is concerned. You will no doubt note the number of days Utah is able to hold tourists in the state as compared with our surrounding states and perhaps wonder why, with our great scenic potential, as compared to other states. It is entirely possible that after the second chart showing budgets for advertising, is compared, you will reach the same conclusion that we hav', that is; that our tourist dollars are directly related to the this state, or any other, spends for advertising. Take the case of the preemie-t- he premature baby whose life may hang by a thread. In a modem hospital he is placed in an isolette the new, improved incubator. There he is shielded from outside danger while electrically controlled heat and humidity help him win his battle for life. And copper, as the metal that controls the special conditions he must have, is a key to his survival. There is a special problem involved in producing copper for the isolette that helps save a preemies life-- as well as in producing copper for the many thousands of other products needed for modem living. s Because the ore at Kennecotts Bingham Mine averages only about of one percent copper, mass production methods must be used to recover the metal. And that requires the investment of millions of dollars in special equipment. Such an investment must be based on the hope of making a profit. Profits were are the reason why the incentive for the establishment of Kennecott Copper-th- ey in business. this enterprise continues By earning a profit Kennecott is able to produce the metal symbolized by the ankh. And that symbol still stands for life, because copper is the heart of the better modem electrical living that is vital to defense, industry, the home and the farm. eight-tenth- CHART NUMBER TWO STATE BUDGETS FOR TRAVEL ADV. & PROMOTION Kennecott Copper Corporation rA New Mexico, Nevada and California consider tourist travel their number one industry. Seventeen other states consider tourist travel among the FIRST THREE industries. As far as this section of the state is concerned, probably the f rst consideration should be in getting roads into the areas vve have to show. This we feel can best be done by all factions in the various counties working together for the mutual benefit of all of us. f Next in importance is advertising what we have, and getting ready to accomodate tourists in our own tovtns after we get them into the areas. Mission 66, which deals with improvement of Nation il Parks and Monuments; and Mission 61 which has to do wiih National Forests, are certainly big boosts to the tv'x; of program that is being proposed, and the Times feels that Utahs congressional delegation, particularly Sen. Bennett and Rep. Dxon, should be complimented for the work they are doing in this direction. Good Neighbor Helping to Build d Better Utah |
