Show m we YOUNG MEN READ. . 7fi be Republicans ij g You Can, Without entering into detail, we will admit that a nun can be honest and be a Republican it is possible for him to be sinceie and firmly believe that the principles of Republicanism are best fur our country. The same allowances are made for a man if he chooses to be a Democrat. It is conceded that there is much that is gtand, sublime and tm. fifing in the principles of each pnity and that the country will never go to ruin but will prosper under the ruling p wer of each; but when we come to apply this logic locally and take into consideration the objects of each party as we find them in Utah, any reasonable man will at once concede that Utah Republicanism will ruin the Territory wheieas Utah Demo' cracy is the only plan of political salvation for the Territory ami fur this reason if for n i other Dent jcracy must inevitably become the dominant political faith of the citizens of the Territory, To mAke this proposition morfe clear let us quote Jtoqi the, speeches and mottoes of t(iJ Republican meeting held In the Grand OpeTajj ipse. Salt Lake City . last Saturday, and put Side by side with these quotation some quotations srora the Utah Demdeyatfc urAtors und 'principles from that pUifiju tn. As them has been no Republican campaign m our Territoty, and no platfuiiu of principles of that party given t t Utah 'Republicans to work on, we must of .necessity take that meeting of last Saturday evening as th expounder of Utah Republicanism 'and what was spid their as being authentic and1 Republicanism, as believed in g Utah. At that meeting they were the election of a Republican President of the United States and of course were filledwith enthusiasm and their kind of patriotism hence what was said must be taken as the true sentiment of Utah Republicans. The quotations we make on the Democratic side every Democrat in the Territory will vouch for as being what he believes in, hence we have no hesitation in making those quotations. We do hesitate however before making the Republican quotations as we honestly believe that there are many genuine Republicans who will read this and repudi 'ate the ideas and principles conveyed in these quotations as being false doctrine and contrary to their feelings and belief, but they rallied with the Republicans and acquiesced in all that was ssid and there is no going back on it now. Of couise we are now referring to Democracy and Republicanism as either effects our Teni-torrati-fiyin- y. Before making the quotations however, we will state that it is possible outside of a church to force the membeus of said church into a situation such that they will be obliged to unite church and state to a considerable extent in order to defend themselves, and of course under such circumstances the stiife that hasex isted here for so long a time will continue to exist, and a party who are instufuental is thus forcing a union of church and state have no right to prate about it afterwards. But then there is no use commenting, strife is what they live on it furnishes excitement and dollars and cents for them, they have got what they want and they are going to strive to keep that. The Utah Democracy, aside from their ideas of the best methods of government, are honestly and sincerely striving to bring about a reign of peace here in Utah and be recognized by the nation in matters political, a citizen belonging to a genuine political party and not as a body of religious lunatics, but as a body of free men. If Republicans gain ground in this Territory, they will be recognized by the nation as Republicans and treated until the same deference that Democrats would be and if, as is evident, their sole aim in matters local is to persecute the Mormons, it is time the Territory as a whole see to it that they are quashed. The principles of Democracy outside of local questions and matters we believe are to the liking of the majority, and the Utali Democracy as against Utah Republicanism are far preferable as Democrats proprose to treat all, Mormon, Jew or Gentile, as free and equal citizens, provided they live within the law whereas Ree publicans, that is, Utah Republicans to 'treat mormons as they would insane people. In fact they say Mormons are cursed with a religious insanity and of course this Includes all, law abiders and law b reakers, and a Mormon cannot, according to them, enjoy his religious liberties and freedom. In other words a Mormon as long as he is a Mormon must suffer from the hatred of Utah Republicans whether or no be is a good or bad citizen, it makes no difference. What do they sa? Let us see. In a very cot.spicous place in the Grand Satur-'da- y Opera House, Salt Lake City last .canvas was 'a up strung, evening bearing in large letters the following from the Chicago platform. The political power of the Mormon Church, as exercised in the past is ato- frep -institutions too dangerous to be longer fostered. pro-poe- This means that under Republican rule members of the Mormon church will have no right to act for themselvs politically as that church is tube no longer fostered. Compare the above u ith the following fiotn the Democratic platform.
