Show !'iv; ' r ', fho Ensign. The young men ' of ilie Territory of Utah are awakening to a more vivid sense than they have had heretofore of the urgent necessity of them thinking, nd acting upon the conclusions reached by those thoughts. This is right and to the young Democracy is this due. , The man who gets up the Rustlings" V for the Beaver Utonian is a rustler indeed, He has rustled the knowledge a that The Ensign hasgone wholly and And gives it to his solely Democratic, M, Readers. Take a bit' of advice friend rustler; be sure you tell your readers the truth when you write for them. The Ensign has not gone, but has always been Democratic wholly and solely, Recently there hagjkg.en a bye and cry raised, and by younjg men too, that the spirit of the times in Utah at present is to be summed up in the following words-Younnjen.come away from what your parents have been teaching you and try something new. Is that not correct gospel? With all due respect to our fathers, how much progress would we make if we always thought and acted just as our fathers did? Yes; we say, young men stay with what is good that your fathers have taught yon, but lead out and grasp for something new. , ' Sam Thurman, the Democratic candidate of Utah, culls his fight a last cause Correct Utonian, We have never heard nor read of Sam Thurman making any such remark. That rustler has been dreaming that he was at a campaign meeting and remembered one of the expressions the Thurman of his dreams made and gives it as a "rustling," He would have hit thq mark however by at least making the Thurman of his dreams tell a truth had he completed the sentence by adding ing to the word last, 'Hie cause referred to is certainly a lasting cause; it will last as ioiig as our fair Territory - . lasts. r , j Has not the Utah Democracy the Sagebrush Democratic party, if you please just cause to be proud? Through ail the hard struggle of the cam paign jpst passed, there has been no one able to find fault or criticise in any. other way but friendly a single plunk in the plat-- form of the party or a single principle BdvMSiiXJinZf&o 4bSEekers, J'i bearer the campaign and their standard (he Hon. S. R. Thurman bears a character that any one might be envious of. His oponents during the whole fight have found nothing in it to censure. Of such broad principles and noble men is the now safe, and law and order are now supreme. During the year 295,841 acres of public land were entered by settlers, 200 miles of canal for irrigating purposes were constructed, and too miles additional arc begun and will be completed during the present year. In this connection Governor Zulick lays much stress upon the act of Congress providing for a survey and location of desett land reservoirs, and suggests the importance of an accurate hydrographic survey of the Territory to demonstrate the feasibility of artesian wells. The yield of gold and silver last year was $5,771,555 which is a good showing for a Territoiy where mining is carried on under so many disadvantageous conditions as it is in many places. Mining in Arizona means hard woik and much patience, and the output mentioned speak-- j well for the perseverance of the miners. Governor Zulick urges the early settlement of the privite land grants in the Territory, and opposes the creation of . a special court to adjudicate upon these claims. Such grants are always a soure of annoyance and vexation to the settlers on public lands, and should be settled as soon as possible. There are great possibilities for Arizona, and the San Francisco Chronicle thinks her future is more intimately connected with the subject of irrigation than with any other one thing. Canals and ditches will turn the desert into a rose garden, and Arizona will become renowned for her ft uits and vegetable products of all kinds. About the most childish piece of work that the press of the Territory has accomplished during the recent campaign was when the Herald management allowed their verdant reporter to get in their columns in his report of the Democratic meeting in Salt Lake City last Saturday evening the following silly effort at redicule, PROP. J . H. PAUL, of the University of Deseret, came next, and with a rhetorical nicety and elocutional y exactness that made a cold sweat run down Doc. Fausts back, he said: They say that we are seeking to divide the Liberal party and they say that we want to divide the Peoples party. Yes, we are seeking to divide them. Wed smash them both if we could. He then proceeded to blast the press of this city. Tribune tmd Hews were swiped with equal vigor and even the Ha aid did not escape his anger. So far as can be learned at present all three organs will go on publishing a daily paper as usual. lrof. Paul made a snort speech a speech every line of which was lull of meaning which was to a certainty delivered with rhetorical and elucution-in- y BRAND OF TIIE Eap Broil DincraS AT Late Salt City. The Democratic campaign meeting which was held in Salt Lake City last Saturday eveiiing, and in which Democrats front other counties were invited to and did participate, was a rousing success in every sense of the word. The tram from the south arriving in Salt Lake City at 6.40 was Well loaded with true blue, genuine Democrats and during their trip they had an excellent time a detailed report of which would make excellent reading but winch must be ommit-e- d to make room for more important matter. The southern Sage Brushers with their bands were met at the depot by a large party of Salt Lakers, in company with whom they marched up South Temple Street to Main Street and thence south to Second South and west' to Grand Opera House. The men in line carried torches, and with the uniformed bands, hairnets etc., made a big show. The column was led be the Ion. S. R. Thurman andj. L. Rawlins. Between them was The who was given the honor of beating the ensign of tbe party, a large bunch of saje brush tied to a stick with a bandana and having fastened to it,and above it a flag bearing the portrait of Cleveland and Thurman and a streamer bearing the name of S. R. 1 Thurman. In the procession were Sage Brush Democrats from all parts of the Territoiy, chiefly from Utah and Salt Lake Counties and the Payson, Provo, Silver, Spanish Fork and Major Kents Military, bands. A very notable feature also of the procession was the Univers typtudents w ho weie out in full force. Tliev canied a banner reading University Students Solid (or Democracy.
