Show Recreation-Touri- st Guide, May, 198915 San Rafael Swell offers diverse opportunities Situated mostly in Emery County, the San Rafael Swell is a geological phenomenon unique in the world. Eons ago, the earths crust burst open and molten magma bubbled out, forming a huge dome of rock, ringed with upthrust sandstone anticlines. Over the centuries, the dome eroded into a maze of canyons, mesas and magma dikes, and today it offers explorations with which none can compare. The Swell once was home to the Fremont culture and remains of their rock art can be found throughout the region. It was also home to old precious-meta- l miners who dug out ore and eventually left behind the mines and shacks near them. Through this region rode the infamous Wild Bunch, led by Butch Cassidy "Y our Home Away From Home " and the Sundance Kid. They even hid out on the remote mesa known today as Sids Mountain. Even today, few roads go through this vast area, but those few offer recreationists the opportunity to explore the Swell and discover all that it has to offer. Many areas are popular due to their easy access and the variety of activities possible, from ORV riding and rock-climbin- to g and camping. sandstone cliffs sprinkled with ancient Indian pictographs and cowboy and outlaw names. The San Rafael Campground is located at the mouth of the draw next to the San Rafael River, and provides the explorer with picnic tables and a toilet. Upriver, the Wedge Overlook provides a striking view .
