An extia foot or two may mean all the difference between safety and disaster. Old methods tor widening existing roads were customarily both expensive and unsatisfactory. In a recent address, piven before the North Atlantic Highway officials' Association, Bernard K. (Iray of the Asphalt Institute, explained a practical method for widening highways that should he of interest to all states. 'I he method is simply to place a thin layer of granular material, such as sand or gravel, over the shoulder, apply a cut hack asphalt, and mix them together in the same manner as an oil processed road mix. The final finish is obtained with a blade grader, traffic soon insures complete compaction. and a comparatively small amount of money has been spent. Methods such as this have been used with great success ig California, for example, where the shoulders are really part of the pavement itself. It is perfectly safe to turn out on them at high speeds, thus making possible the full use of the road with greater safety and an increase in capacity. In case the definite addition of new pavement is required, hot mix asphalt is used. As years pass, the widening of old roads becomes more and more a problem. Many important arteries were built for the traffic of ten years ago. and arc simply a series of hazards to that of today. The inexpensive widening of highways is the solution of the road problem in many communities. The Utah State road commission has a program to put into effect m (acne connty that will solve the proileni of a narrow state highway. The program already announced is to cover the rapidly wearing concrete pavement between Wellsville and Loan and between Lopan and Smithfield. There will be a foot or two width added to the present highway which will add materially to the safety of motorists. -- Var til! i NOLAND :i ot vmn, U in! ! rd i'i ANn nxiviJ r.c: r. lin.n AdkritiM.-i- r ? 1!' tl.i All t1- 1 l ' IliC ti 3, l I'tot (.'(.'lit 9 of J C.
