During the year, 48,940 additional farms were added to the number already using service, bringing the total close to 700,000, as compared with 177,500 at the end of 1923. The most pronounced increases came in the South Atlantic and east north central districts, with gains of 12.7 and 10.4 per cent respectively. The increase, which is, of course, smaller than it would have been in happier times .shows that the rural electrification movement is making consistent and steady progress. Farms are being added to high lines as quickly as economic factors will permit, and the electric industry is doing everything possible to expedite the work. What complete rural electrification will mean to the farmer is not hard to forecast. It will mean the elimination of much of the drudgery associated with farm work from time immemorial, and a new and much higher standard of domestic comfort than the farm family has ever known before. It will mean that certain important chores can be performed not only more quickly, but less expensively. Electric power is proving cheaper than any other kind of power the farmer has. It will mean, in short, a new era for agriculture an era that has been long awaited. And it is pleasant to reflect that even in so tempestuous a year as 1931, almost 50,000 more farmers received the benefits of electricity. Furthermore, the people have a tremendous direct financial interest in the railroads. Outstanding railroad bands and notes amount to $11,500,000,000. and stocks total over $7,000,000,000.
